A 29-year-old Winnipegger waiting for roadside assistance on Highway 1 near Elie, about 50 miles west of Winnipeg, was fatally struck by a tractor-trailer on Friday.

Earlier, the cube truck in which the victim and another 25-year-old man were traveling collided with a guardrail, which damaged their own vehicle, informs the Royal Canadian Mounted Police ( RCMP) in a press release.

The two men then got out of their cube truck and were waiting for roadside assistance, when a tractor-trailer traveling eastbound on the Trans-Canada Highway and trying to bypass the vehicle hit it with its trailer, specifies the RCMP.

The force of the trailer impact pushed the cube truck onto the two men, police said.

The two men were taken to hospital, where the 29-year-old passenger succumbed to his injuries. The 25-year-old driver suffered serious, but not fatal, injuries, RCMP say.

Police say a 23-year-old man from Brampton, Ont., was driving the semi-trailer. trailer. He was uninjured and immediately pulled over to provide medical assistance to the two men until paramedics arrived.
