4 crazy figures on the explosion of data leaks in France

Auchan, SFR, Free, and Cultura, the list of large French companies that have been victims of data leaks has exploded in 2024, causing some inconvenience and increased risks for their customers. The National Agency for the Security of Information Systems (ANSSI) and the National Commission for Information Technology and Liberties (CNIL) have just published a statistical report on this phenomenon.

A growing threat to customers

Last year, the authority recorded 5,629 notifications of data breaches, 20% more than in 2023. Worse, the number of data breaches involving more than a million people has doubled in one year. Their total amounted to around twenty in 2023 compared to around forty last year.

Which leads Marie-Laure Denis, the president of the CNIL, to say: “For us, the most worrying trend concerns the increase in very large-scale violations”

For its part, Anssi noted 121 leaks concerning large entities in 2023 and 115 in 2024 as well as 236 cybersecurity incidents linked to personal data breaches. Interviewed by AFP, its CEO, Vincent Strubel, comments: “It gives the impression of an explosion, but it is not something that is verified in the facts”.

The manager also notes an increasing activity of organized criminal groups. That said, some pirates are also perfect amateurs who can just as easily come from France as from abroad.

Faced with this challenge that is increasingly causing reactions, the CNIL promises to increase controls on the security of large databases. “A certain number of adequate measures to prevent the risks of violation” should therefore be put in place.

E. Leclerc targeted in turn

As if to drive the point home and almost at the same time, the major French retailer, E. Leclerc, announced on Monday that it had observed “fraudulent attempts to access”on E.Leclerc Energy Bonus accounts. The name, first name, email address, file number, bonus amount and service description of customers may have been exposed. This provides an ideal entry point for future scams.
