4-year-old shot with a firearm on a 6-year-old child on Tuesday evening at Peguis First Nation, located just under 200 km north of Winnipeg, Manitoba, according to a press release from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) released Thursday.
On February 27, 2023 at approximately 11:10 p.m., Fisher Branch RCMP Detachment was notified that a 6-year-old child had been taken to hospital due to a gunshot wound. The investigation determined that earlier that evening children were at a Peguis First Nation residence when they gained access to a firearm. A 4-year-old discharged the firearm, and a 6-year-old was hit, RCMP say.
Federal police say the 6-year-old was taken to hospital with serious injuries, but his life is not in danger.
On Wednesday, the RCMP conducted a search in relation to the incident during which officers seized five firearms, a crossbow and ammunition.
A man was arrested and faces a charge of unlawful storage of a weapon on fire.
