Found guilty of sexual assault, the ;ex-Rimouskois massage therapist and kinesiologist Patrick Chénard receives a sentence of 6 years and 3 months in prison.
In addition to his prison sentence, Patrick Chénard will also be on the sex offender register for life.
During sentencing on Friday morning at the Rimouski courthouse, Patrick Chénard did not hold Judge Jules Berthelot's gaze and looked around him.
Judge Berthelot called him a predator and pointed to several aggravating factors in his case, including that he assaulted 10 victims, some of whom were minors, who will live long term with the consequences of his actions.
The ex-massage therapist's probation officer, for his part, affirmed that Patrick Chénard has deviant sexual behavior and represents a medium risk of recidivism.
The defense lawyer , Caroline Bérubé, indicates that an analysis will be made to determine whether the sentence imposed on her client will be appealed. The defense already indicated its intention to appeal the guilty verdict last April.
For his part, the Crown prosecutor, Normand Morneau-Deschênes, says he is satisfied with the length of imprisonment imposed, which is even more severe than that which he had recommended during the submissions on the sentence, last May. .
“What we understand is that the judge had the same vision as the public prosecutor for the seriousness of the crimes.
— Me Normand Morneau-Deschênes
At several stages of the judicial process, Me Morneau-Deschênes reiterated the importance of public confidence in the justice system, who, according to him, should impose a severe sentence in order to set an example for similar situations that could happen in the future.
Patrick Chenard had been arrested in June 2018. He was convicted of sexually assaulting 10 women last January.
