As part of the “grain deal”, 10 million tons of grain were exported from Ukraine. This was stated by UN Secretary General António Guterres, speaking at a briefing at the organization's headquarters in New York.

“They say that a person does not always appreciate the things that he has until he is faced with the prospect of losing them. I am sure that over the past few days the world has understood and appreciated the importance of the Black Sea Grain Initiative,” he stressed.

The “grain deal”, according to Guterres, is necessary for mankind. The agreement helps to overcome the food crisis, reduce food prices, and minimize the risks of widespread famine, poverty and instability in the world.

“The world sees that the Black Sea Initiative is changing the situation for the better… Despite all the obstacles we have faced, the beacon of hope on the Black Sea continues to light our path,” the Secretary General continued.

António Guterres thanked Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan for his decisive contribution to the resumption of the grain corridor. The head of the UN called on all parties to fully implement the Black Sea Initiative and remove obstacles to the export of Russian food and fertilizers.

The Secretary General recalled that farmers suffer from a shortage of fertilizers, so their global shortage could turn into a global food shortage.

The head of the European diplomatic service, Josep Borrell, thanked Turkey and the UN for mediating the resumption of the “grain deal”.

“The EU is grateful for the help of the UN and Turkey in Russia's decision to return to the Black Sea grain initiative. Food should never be used as a weapon,” the diplomat said.

Borrell called on all parties to extend the deal and said that the supply of Ukrainian grain alleviates the global food crisis.

Russia's return to the “grain deal”

The Russian Ministry of Defense said earlier that Moscow received written guarantees from Kyiv not to use the “grain corridor” for military purposes.

Ukrainian Foreign Ministry refuted the statements of the Russian Federation about Ukraine's alleged assumption of additional obligations and guarantees not to use the “grain corridor” for fighting. Minister Dmitry Kuleba emphasizes that Ukraine has never used the “grain corridor” for military purposes, and Moscow's talk about “guarantees” is a way to save face.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced the opening of the “grain corridor” November 2. He emphasized his efforts for this in negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Putin, according to the Turkish leader, showed a “constructive approach”, returning Russia to the “grain deal”. The President of Turkey proposed to supply fertilizers and agricultural products from the Russian Federation to Djibouti, Somalia and Sudan.
