The BEI announced on Saturday the launch of an investigation in Montreal after a man was shot dead during a police intervention.

The Independent Investigations Bureau (BEI) has launched an investigation into the circumstances of an intervention involving the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM) that caused a death at Île-des-Sœurs, Saturday noon.

SPVM police were called to intervene with a man, possibly in possession of a handgun, walking near the building. intersection of boulevard René-Lévesque and rue Berlioz on the island located in the borough of Verdun, according to the BEI.

The man, who would then have been located by a police officer, would have pointed his weapon in his direction and the agent would have fired at least one shot, continues the BEI in a press release.

Five BEI investigators were assigned to investigate on the circumstances of the event. The Sûreté du Québec will act as a support police force.
