Basketball player Brittney Griner was detained at a Moscow airport in February. Her vape cartridge contained 0.7 grams of hash oil. Earlier it was reported that the American could be exchanged for the “arms baron” Viktor Bout.
The prosecutor in the Russian Federation requested 9.5 years in prison and a fine of one million rubles for American basketball player Brittney Griner, who was detained with hash oil at Moscow's Sheremetyevo airport. The Russian agency RIA Novosti writes about this.
“By partial addition, I finally ask you to appoint nine years and six months in prison with a sentence in a general regime colony with a fine of 1 million rubles,” the prosecutor's agency quotes from Khimki court, where the hearings are held.
As the media of the aggressor country clarifies, Greiner pleaded guilty in court, but stressed that she had no malicious intent to commit a crime, and “collected the bag in a hurry.”
The court also found that the doctor prescribed marijuana to her as a pain reliever due to the side effects of the pills.
The story of Brittney Greiner: arrested for 0.7 grams of hash oil
Brittney Greiner was detained on February 17 at Sheremetyevo Airport in Moscow. In her hand luggage, a vape (electronic cigarette) was found, in the cartridge to which there was 0.7 grams of hash oil. It is legal in many US states, but banned in Russia.
A US citizen came to the Russian Federation because she participated in the Russian Premier League games as part of the Yekaterinburg club team.
The trial of the US citizen and two-time Olympic champion began on July 1. She is being tried under article 229.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (drug smuggling), the punishment for which is from 5 to 10 years in prison.
On July 4, Greiner asked US President Joe Biden for help.

Last week, the White House and the US State Department said they made a “substantive and meaningful offer” to the Russian side to exchange the athlete, as well as Paul Whelan, suspected of espionage. True, American politicians did not specify for whom exactly they want to exchange their citizens.
However, CNN, in turn, citing high-ranking sources, reported that the Joe Biden administration had proposed to exchange them for a well-known Russian arms dealer Victor Bout, sentenced in the USA to 25 years. In the American media, Bout was nicknamed the “Merchant of Death”.
His activities inspired the 2005 film Lord of War War), in which Nicolas Cage played the main role.
The Russian Foreign Ministry reported that negotiations on the exchange of prisoners between Russia and the United States were underway, but there was no concrete result on the exchange of Bout for Greiner and Whelan.
“The issue of the mutual exchange of Russian and American citizens in places of detention on the territory of the two countries was once discussed by the presidents of Russia and the United States. They instructed the relevant authorized structures to carry out negotiations. They are being conducted by the competent departments. A concrete result has not yet been achieved “, – commented the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Za Kharova.
In September 2019, Viktor Bout's wife was allowed to visit him in prison for the first time in 7 years.
