American filmmaker Spike Lee is going to tackle a new genre in his filmography, with a musical … on the creation of Viagra.

Emblematic figure of the African-American protest in American cinema, Spike Lee has always stood out through his filmography by tackling various genres to inject a current and relevant political point. Da 5 Bloods: Blood Brothers , his latest film, released on Netflix, is yet more recent proof of this, if there was one.

And the filmmaker continues to surprise us, from project to project. After his film on the Vietnam War, the director announced that he was going to tackle a cinematographic genre never before seen in his filmography.

Chadwick Boseman, whose specter hangs over Spike Lee's latest film

Indeed, after the heist film with Inside Man, the police comedy with BlacKkKlansman, or the war film with Da 5 Bloods (via the crappy remake, with Oldboy , but let's move on), Spike Lee will make a musical … On Viagra.

If the ad seems straight out of an episode of Kamoulox, it is nevertheless a very serious project, which the filmmaker would have had the idea by reading an article in Esquire magazine. Signed by journalist David Kushner, the article is titled All Rise: The Untold Story of the Guys Who Launched viagra [Get up: the untold story of the guys who launched Viagra, in French, editor's note]. Like what, anything can serve as inspiration.

According to Variety, little information has yet been circulated on the project. We just know that the filmmaker collaborates with the British playwright Kwame Kwei-Armah on the script side and that in production , we will find Matt Jackson, producer of the Chicago Seven by Aaron Sorkin, recently released on the platform at N rouge.

As for the music, we know that the lyrics will be composed by Stew Stewart and Heidi Rodewald, a duo of musicians already at work on the soundtrack of Passing Strange, a Broadway musical which the filmmaker recorded in 2009. And finally, that already makes a lot of details.

When you hear that Spike Lee's next movie will sing about viagra …

It will be a first for Spike Lee, who has never directed a sung and danced scenario in his cinema. In a statement, the filmmaker thanked his mother, without whom he would never have had the inspiration for a musical:

“I didn't want to see old-fashioned people singing and dancing at the time. What I wanted instead was to play with my friends in the neighborhood at stop ball, stick ball, punch ball, soft ball and basketball. Thank you to her for not having listened to my endless grievances about musicals, because I am entering the fourth decade of my directorial career with a film sung and danced. I'm not telling you how much I can't wait. “

If the subject has the merit of being original, this is not the first time that the blue pill developed by the Pfizer laboratory has been talked about. She was already at the center of the comedy Love, and other drugs , with Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway, released in 2010.

No title or release date has obviously been announced for the moment.
