After houses and planes, Starlink arrives in cars
After planes, Starlink has just offered a new offer on its site, dedicated to cars and moving objects.
Stralink never ceases to impress. SpaceX's satellite internet solution is having a very good year in 2022. The project has matured and the first results are beginning to be seen.
Globally, Starlink can already count on 400,000 subscribers, including 6,500 in France alone. With its satellite internet offer, the company mainly targets isolated regions of the globe. For Elon Musk, boss of SpaceX, Starlink must make it possible to provide uniform access to the Internet everywhere in the world.
Over the past few months, the Starlink system has been very useful in Ukraine, where it has enabled to connect the country with the rest of the world as the Russian invasion threatened terrestrial communications infrastructure.
Starlink Aviation : Elon Musk's latest find
Building on this success, Starlink launched a new service a few days ago: Starlink Aviation. The idea is simple, to allow airlines to provide their passengers with access to the Internet without geographical constraints.
Today connecting to the Internet in an aircraft in flight is an obstacle course and Starlink could greatly simplify things with its offer (at $25,000 per month). A sign of the sector's interest, a first “test” contract was signed with Hawaiian Airlines.
But Starlink does not want to give internet only to planes. SpaceX has just announced that the constellation's satellites will be able to provide internet access to people on the move on Earth. A new offer that should cost between 600 and 2500 dollars for the installation of the antenna. The subscription will be $135 per month.
Connecting your van or motorhome to the internet is possible
On the SpaceX site, we learn that the antenna was designed to be “permanently installed on the vehicle”. resistant to rain, cold and heat, weather conditions should not have an impact on the quality of the internet connection.
At the moment it is not possible to subscribe to this offer and embark headlong on a world tour in a van. Indeed SpaceX explains that its constellation, currently made up of 2000 satellites, is not yet large enough to cover the entire planet.
On the SpaceX website a map of the world draws the areas eligible for such a service and those which are not. Giving internet to moving vehicles has been in SpaceX's plans for months.
Starlink: A solution to connect the world to the internet
Elon Musk hopes this new offer will be able to bring together two of its companies, Tesla and SpaceX. For its part, the FCC, in charge of the regulation of communications, only gave its agreement during the summer for such exploitation.
In the long term “all moving objects » boats, planes or motorhomes can be connected to the internet thanks to the SpaceX solution. This is at least the ambition displayed by Elon Musk, the big boss of the company.
