Alberta government wants to ban compulsory mask-wearing at school

The Alberta government wants children not to be required to wear a mask at school.

The Alberta government wants to stop requiring students to wear masks at school, Premier Danielle Smith said in a statement on Saturday.

Smith says that masks have played a detrimental role in children's mental health and education in both kindergarten and grade 12.

We must turn the page on what has been a very difficult time for children, parents and teachers, says the Prime Minister.

She asks his Minister of Justice, Tyler Shandro, to consider whether the government should appeal a recent Court of King's Bench decision in this case.

Thursday, a judge has ruled that the decision to lift the mask requirement at school was unreasonable and that it was up to Chief Medical Officer Deena Hinshaw, not the government.

Danielle Smith asks Mr. Shandro, as well as the Ministers of Health and Education, to inform him of rules or legislative changes that the government could employ in order to reaffirm or clarify its role in the field of Education and Health.
