The actress said that it was a great honor for her to embody the legendary image on the screen.
Oscar-winning American actress Angelina Jolie will embody the image of an American singer of Greek origin, one of the greatest opera singers of the 20th century, Maria Callas in the biographical drama of the Chilean director Pablo Larrain, who directed the biopics “Spencer” (about Princess Diana) and “Jackie” (about the wife of President John F. Kennedy) , according to the Hollywood Reporter.
The film, tentatively titled “Maria”, based on a true story, will tell the “stormy, beautiful and tragic story” of the life of one of the world's greatest opera singers, relived and reimagined in her last days in Paris in the 1970s.
The script for the film is being written by Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight, who worked with Larraine on Spencer. The film will be produced by Juan de Dios Larrain for Fabula Pictures, Lorenzo Mieli for The Apartment Pictures, Fremantle and Jonas Dornbach for Komlizen Film.
The 47-year-old actress is looking forward to filming:
“I take responsibility for Maria's life and legacy very seriously. I will do everything in my power to meet this challenge. Pablo Larrain is a director I have long admired. To be able to tell more about Maria's story with him and through written by Steven Knight is a dream”.
In turn, Larrain noted:
“The opportunity to combine my two deepest and most personal passions , cinema and opera, was a long-awaited dream. To do this with Angelina, an extremely daring and inquisitive actress, is a wonderful opportunity. A real gift. “
