The first Fêtes de la Nouvelle-France took place in Old Quebec from August 7 to 11, 1997.

The 7 August 1997, the Fêtes de la Nouvelle-France took place in Old Quebec. Since then, at the beginning of each August, Quebec lives to the rhythm of the beginning of the colony for four days. Our journalists went to meet its peasants, Daughters of the King, lords and other characters of the 17th and 18th centuries.

On site, actors personify several other important figures of the New France era: Ursulines, Jesuits, peasants and also the King's Daughters.

The reproduction of the scene of their arrival in 1664 attracted many curious people who also dressed up for the occasion. Many women wear a piqué cap and an apron over their linen dress, while the men wear a headgear called a tricorn.

In her report presented on August 8, 1997 in Téléjournal, journalist Christiane Latortue explains that the King's Daughters were so nicknamed, because it is the king who paid for their passage to come to America.

The Ursulines took care of the young girls, who had to find a husband in order to populate the colony. Ten years after the arrival of the King's Daughters, the population of New France had doubled to 6,700 people.

Since 2018, the Fêtes de la Nouvelle-France have been celebrated in Esplanade park between D'Auteuil, Saint-Louis and Dauphine streets. This activity attracts more than 200,000 visitors each summer.
