Ukrainian Armed Forces proved compatibility with NATO - British Ambassador

Ukraine to join The alliance needs to carry out “substantial” defense reforms, stressed Melinda Simmons.

Even before the war with the Russian Federation, the Armed Forces of Ukraine demonstrated compatibility with the NATO army, and Kyiv's political decision to join the alliance is primarily associated with reforms in the defense sector. This was stated by British Ambassador to Ukraine Melinda Simmons in an interview with Interfax-Ukraine, which was published on November 7.

“I think that in all this (Ukraine's desire to join NATO – ed.) there is an element of political solutions. It has always been and always will be. I don't think this is discounted. But I also believe that there is a close relationship between the need for significant reforms and a political solution, because if you do not make progress on these reforms, you will give very a convenient reason for those who may be less interested in continuing to expand membership,” the British diplomat stressed.

According to her, NATO is in principle open to countries that can collectively play a role in European security.< /p>

“The only thing that this war did, which no one wanted, was to show how the Ukrainian Armed Forces are capable of operating with standard NATO equipment. But in fact, we knew this even before the war … But we We also knew that the problem was not compatibility, in the sense that it had already been done. It was about the institutional reform of defense mechanisms, defense procurement, defense human resources, etc., where, as we all know, there is still a lot of work to be done,” Simmons specified.

Recall that on September 30, President Vladimir Zelensky has applied for an accelerated entry of Ukraine into NATO.
