“Sensitive Character”

“A tourist was charged and trampled by an elephant […] . This accident unfortunately resulted in the death of the victim”, indicates a press release.

Due to the “sensitive character” of this “tragic accident” , SAN Parks asks to “refrain from post or share photos and videos of the incident on social media”.

Popular among safari enthusiasts, the Kruger, which comprises some 20,000 km2 of vast, unfenced savannah stretching into neighbouring Mozambique, is South Africa's largest national park.

Except in fenced camps and at some picnic areas, it is forbidden to get out of your vehicle. “Further information will be communicated in due course” regarding the circumstances of the accident, SAN Parks specifies.

Not uncommon attacks

Elephant attacks are not uncommon in the region. In 2021, a suspected poacher was killed by elephants in the same famous Kruger Park. In 2023, 50 people were killed and 85 injured by wild animals, mainly elephants, in Zimbabwe
