Unsurprisingly, the Italian, defending champion, dominated the German in three sets.

Defending champion in Melbourne, world No. 1 Jannik Sinner won his second Australian Open in a row on Sunday against Alexander Zverev (2nd), beaten in the final of a Grand Slam for the third time in his career.

The 23-year-old Italian won 6-3, 7-6 (7/4), 6-3 in the final of the first major tournament of the season to claim his third Grand Slam title, having also won the US Open in 2024.

The most successful Italian

Thanks to his victory, Sinner is now the most successful player in the history of his country in the four main tournaments of world tennis (Australian Open, Roland Garros, Wimbledon, US Open), ahead of his compatriot Nicola Pietrangeli, winner of Roland Garros in 1959 and 1960.

Sinner had already become in 2024 the first Italian to win the Australian Open and to occupy the place of world number 1. He lined up a 21st victory in a row on Sunday, the longest series of successes of his career. After two failures, in the final of the 2020 US Open and 2024 Roland-Garros, Alexander Zverev (27 years old) suffered his third defeat in as many matches for the Grand Slam title on Sunday in Melbourne.

Becker, the last German

The last German player to have won a major title in the men's category remains Boris Becker, winner of the Australian Open in 1996. Despite his defeat, Zverev still leads 4 wins to 3 in his duels with Jannik Sinner, who on the other hand has equalized in the Grand Slam duels (2 wins each).
