High representative of the European Union Josep Borrell expressed his regret because of the decision of Turkey to return the status of a mosque the Hagia Sophia.

In a statement, EU high representative notes that the Hagia Sophia has a strong symbolic, historical and universal significance.
“The decision of the Turkish State Council on the cancellation of one of the greatest decisions of modern Turkey and the decision of President Erdogan on the transfer of the monument under the control of the Presidency of religious Affairs to be deplored. As a founding member of the Alliance of civilizations, Turkey has committed itself to promote interreligious and intercultural dialogue and to foster tolerance and coexistence”, — said Borel.
Earlier, Erdogan said that he wants to turn Hagia Sophia into a mosque as a “response” the US President Donald Trump, who supported Israeli sovereignty over the Golan heights.
