Before climbing Mont Blanc, you will need to pay a funeral deposit €15,000

The idea came about after a group of amateur climbers from Romania attempted to summit the 4,809m peak wearing shorts, sneakers and straw hats.

Climbers wishing to summit Europe's highest peak will need to pay a deposit in the amount of 15,000 euros, in case they need the help of rescuers or if the trip to the mountains ends in death. This is reported by The Daily Mail.

This is the decision of Jean-Marc Peylex, mayor of the municipality of Saint-Gervais-les-Bains, who decided in this way to fight dozens of amateurs who risk their lives, despite warnings.

The deposit consists of two parts: 10,000 euros cover the costs of the rescue service, and 5,000 euros will go to pay for the funeral.

Through the popular Guter route, the path to the top is available to anyone, regardless of training and skill level. According to the authorities, the number of inexperienced climbers is constantly growing.

Due to a rockfall in July, local authorities urged tourists to stop climbing, and the guides were forced to stop working for a while. The recent heat wave has also worsened the conditions for climbing Mont Blanc.

“Sometimes the attention of stupid people can only be attracted by stupid ideas,” the local mayor explained in an interview with reporters. “They behave like suicides. Therefore, I offered to pay the costs in advance “.

The official explained that the idea came about after a group of tourists from Romania attempted to climb the 4,000-meter Mont Blanc in shorts, sneakers and straw hats. The mountain police returned them back.

With the help of a mandatory deposit, the local authorities want to reduce the burden on French taxpayers, since previously the costs of rescuing and burying failed climbers were paid from the budget.

C the Italian side of Mont Blanc for now for free

At the same time, it will be possible to try to conquer the summit from the Italian side of the mountains without any preliminary expenses.

The mayor of the Italian Courmayeur Roberto Rota called the idea of his French colleague surreal, saying that the Italian side would not impose restrictions on tourists.< /p>

“Mountains are not anyone's property. As administrators, we can only warn you when conditions are not the best on mountain routes. But asking for a deposit for the opportunity to climb to the top is something surreal. You can only close the route in case of danger,” Rota said in an interview with Corriere Della Sera.

How many people died on Mont Blanc?

In 27 years, since Between 1990 and 2017, 102 people died between the Tet-Rousse and Gowther tourist camps. As a rule, in most cases, tourists overcome this segment in three hours. Most often, accidents occur from falling down, falling stones from above, or when tourists get lost during bad weather.
