Yuri SAI “FACTS”
Exactly 14 years ago, on 26 June 2006, the national team of Ukraine on football has yet achieved very significant success in its history, reached on the results of the thrilling penalty shootout with Switzerland in the quarter-finals of the world Cup in Germany.
Your humble servant was lucky enough to be on that hot evening at the stadium in Cologne. Believe me, it is not forgotten!
As you know, the main time of the match of 1/8 final against the Swiss, in which the “yellow-blue”, in addition to thousands of fans, supported the Klitschko brothers, Serhiy Bubka, Sviatoslav Vakarchuk ended in a 0-0 draw, and destiny of the permit in a quarterfinal was decided on penalties.
The tension was so great that Oleh Blokhin has asked the players to determine the top five hitters (dependability the fifth stroke was applied Vladislav Vashchuk) and when he got sick, went into the locker room. It is only when one of the players of the national team of Ukraine, after a decisive blow Oleg Gusev was formed a bunch of small, our head coach back in the bowl. Oleh Blokhin didn’t hide the tears. Ammonia and tablet validol brought our coach in a sense. It seemed that during those minutes he had aged a few years…
But it began a series could not be worse — with penalties of Andriy Shevchenko. But then there was the “panenka” Artem Milevsky, the exact impact of Sergei Rebrov and the decisive goal by Oleg Gusev. And, of course, “magic” our goalkeeper Oleksandr Shovkovskiy became the first goalkeeper in the history of final tournaments of the world Cup, in which the penalty shootout scored never — 3:0 (up to Ukrainians only two goalkeeper missed one goal — the German Tony Schumacher in 1986 and Bulgarian Borislav Mikhailov in 1994).
I remember after the match in the mixed zone, I asked Milevsky: “the Theme, what are you doing?” And he calmly: “Yurik, I was sure.” And that — after a penalty, not implemented by Andriy Shevchenko!

Then my colleagues all night took the train from Cologne to Berlin, where it was based during the world Cup. No one for a second didn’t sleep a wink. Ukraine — in the quarterfinals! And we are living witnesses.
By the way, one of my friends after the match with Switzerland together with his son-a schoolboy directly from the stadium rushed to the hotel where our team stayed. Later he proudly showed the photo of the boys with Shevchenko, Voronin, Gusev… Single shot, I admit, I’m floored. Igor Kolomoisky, Oleg Blokhin and the kid from Mironovka on a joint photo holding… big smoked bream. In Cologne!
Earlier, the “FACTS” reported that in the quarterfinals of the 2006 world Cup the national team of Ukraine lost to Italy.
