Third generation iPhone SE © Apple

L’iPhone SE 3 is the only current model that is classified mid-range at Apple. But those who know the Apple firm know that it would never release a “low cost” product. And precisely, the third generation iPhone SE is not one of them. In fact, you still have to pay 529 euros to get this model.

Given its discounted technical sheet, this may come as a surprise. But that's without taking into account the fact that this mobile doesn't include the slightest overlay. Additionally, Apple not only designs the operating system, but also the processor. Consequently, the American firm takes the opportunity to offer you joint optimizations between hardware and software – very rare among the competition. Only the Google Pixel 8a can offer the same advantage, within this comparison.

The third-generation iPhone SE comes with a 4.7-inch screen only; it's small. Biometric unlocking via Face ID is not available on this model, but replaced by an already very effective fingerprint sensor.

the Google Pixel 8a © Presse-citron.net

The Google Pixel 8a , it's the latest generation inexpensive smartphone from Alphabet. This device also has an in-house design from A to Z, but it is especially recognized for its excellent photo performance. In reality, this mobile is even so complete that it is clearly difficult to find any faults in it. Maybe charging is too slow, but that's also the case with the third-generation iPhone SE. The same goes for the size/screen ratio, which is low.

With the Google Pixel 8a, you also benefit from Gemini Nano, Google's on-board artificial intelligence. For comparison, while Cupertino has just unveiled Apple Intelligence, the iPhone SE 3s are not entitled to it! For transcription of text into audio or automated writing, it is better to opt for the Google Pixel 8a as an inexpensive smartphone.

Be careful, however, because the Google Pixel 8a is quite expensive. More expensive than the third-generation iPhone SE, which is nevertheless aimed at the same audience. A shame for an Android manufacturer! You have to pay the tidy sum of 549 euros for a Google Pixel 8a. Besides, as we explained previously, there is almost nothing to complain about. The quality/price ratio is even there despite the price, that's saying something.

On the technical sheet side, note that the Google Pixel 8a comes with eight gigabytes of RAM and a screen of more than six inches. Bluetooth 5.3 is obviously there to connect you to your wireless headphones, as is Wi-Fi 6E – unavailable on iPhone SE 3. Finally, an imposing sixty-four megapixel wide-angle sensor is installed on the back of the Google Pixel 8a, which is recharged via USB-C. Universal technology allows you to quickly find a cable to help you out, in case you forget.

the Nothing Phone 2 seen from behind © Presse-citron.net

Il Just look at the Nothing Phone (2a) to see that it's a cheap smartphone that's really different from the others. The design is simply unique, and will allow you to entertain the gallery during all dinners with friends. This smartphone is still a device that is still widely used, especially among connoisseurs, like the first OnePlus models in their time. As a bonus, the product only costs 349 euros: this time, it's really affordable, especially for a recognized manufacturer like this one. Young, certainly, but recognized.

The Nothing Phone (2a) is, however, not IP68 certified. This is a big downside to its technical sheet, because it means that the device is not as waterproof as many of its competitors. The charger is also not provided in the box, an item mainly reserved for high-end models these days. Besides, make no mistake: this smartphone indeed sticks to the promise of a low-cost device, in particular because of a camera that could be improved. However, this is not the most expensive component.

The screen, on the other hand, is. However, the panel of the Nothing Phone (2a) is magnificent and its touch control system is very responsive. Our full-scale test of the device also considers that the version of Android offered there is the best “to date”, but this remains to be seen. ;#8217;approval of everyone. In any case, the overlay is rather fluid and is not full of features, each more optional than the other. Performance is also there, whether in terms of endurance or raw power. This, despite the presence of a simple MediaTek Dimension 7200 Pro processor under the hood.

If discounts are offered on this already low price, these should appear in this table:

The Samsung Galaxy A55 is THE inexpensive smartphone par excellence. It is indeed perhaps the best-selling, at least on the Old Continent. However, it is not the most affordable with still 499 euros on the bill, here. In addition, performance is lagging behind, whereas today even basic smartphones can do it. Battery life is also poor, not to mention the slow charging and the lack of wireless charging.

On the other hand, the manufacturer has made a real effort here by abandoning the plastic of its predecessor (the Samsung Galaxy A54) in favor of a design made entirely of glass and aluminum. These are premium finishes, which one does not traditionally expect on a cheap smartphone. Clearly, this device does nothing like the others.

In addition, an SD card slot is included, with this iPhone SE-killer assumed. So you don't have to break the bank on a model with internal storage provided, since you can get double that for just a few dozen euros with third-party accessories. As for the interface, it is One UI. The overlay also equips the best Samsung smartphones, including the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 and the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra.

In short, the Samsung Galaxy A55 is a good compromise if you cannot find what you are looking for in the five other inexpensive smartphones that we have taken the time to compare. In addition, the screen is very beautiful and large where the third generation iPhone SEs are limited to only 4.7 inches (that's really little, and surprising in 2024).

The inexpensive smartphone for gamers.

The Redmi Note 13 is also one of the best-selling in its sector, running Android like the five other inexpensive smartphones we compared. This device only costs 199.90 euros in mainland France: a price finally accessible to all. The AMOLED screen also offers a refresh rate of one hundred and twenty images per second, whereas you have to pay more than a thousand euros to be entitled to it on a 2023 iPhone. Be aware that the higher this rate is higher, the more the quality of video games suffers.

However, this smartphone offers a large screen which is perfect for mobile gamers. The Mali-G57 MC2 GPU also turns out to be rather robust, despite some notable lags which will force some to turn to premium hardware like the ROG Phone from Asus. Recharging also takes quite a long time, but as the battery life is there, it's not very annoying. It seems that the manufacturer has been able to compensate for the many disadvantages of a cheap smartphone with other advantages, even if bloatware is not exactly one of them.

The Redmi Note 13 offers photos with questionable results, so there is no need to go into detail about the sensors. But this is not what will hold back most users anyway, many of whom will therefore turn to this inexpensive smartphone for its discount price. Especially when we know that there are still eight or twelve gigabytes of RAM that await us under the chassis, with this model. That is much more than with a third generation iPhone SE.

On the technical sheet side, we will note the presence here of an imposing 5& ;nbsp;000 mAh and a sixteen megapixel wide-angle sensor on the front, for selfies. The device is of course charged via USB-C, like all the cheap Android smartphones that we have compared in this guide.

Motorola Edge 40 Neo

The best cheap smartphone to get 100% charge very quickly.

The Motorola Edge 40 Neo is the outsider that we don't always think of. There are indeed many benefits such as the distribution of careful images, a limited price or even the possibility of benefiting from a rapid supply of electricity. The main photo sensor is also of good quality, although to the detriment of an ultra wide-angle that could be improved. The device also has everything you would expect from a cheap smartphone, such as adequate size, seamless connectivity and compatibility with 99% of your favorite apps.

Choosing Motorola, however, means not betting on the long term. In fact, major updates are only supported here for two short years! For comparison, some manufacturers do not hesitate to promise no less than five years of major updates. If you were planning to save to protect the planet, you're missing out with this model. Prefer for example a Fairphone, with many similar disadvantages to note from the first days of use.

You can obtain the Motorola Edge 40 Neo in online for 399 euros. No reader for SD cards this time, but internal storage of 256 GB all the same.
