On December 4, 2024, CEO Brian Thompson was shot dead in the heart of Manhattan, a borough of New York City (United States). The suspect was arrested by American police after a five-day manhunt.
The man suspected of shooting Brian Thompson, CEO of UnitedHealth's insurance unit, outside a Manhattan hotel last week has been arrested, New York City authorities announced Monday, after a five-day manhunt.
The suspect, identified as Luigi Mangione, 26, was arrested in Altoona, Pennsylvania, after being identified at a McDonald's by a restaurant employee who thought he looked like the shooter, authorities said at a news conference.
Luigi Mangione was found in possession of a “ghost gun”– a gun assembled from parts, making it untraceable – and a silencer that matched the gun used to shoot Brian Thompson, New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said, as well as clothing and a mask similar to those worn by the killer.
The gun may have been made using a 3-D printer, New York Police Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said.
The suspect had multiple fraudulent IDs, including a fake New Jersey ID that matched the one the shooter used to check into a Manhattan hostel days before the shooting, the authorities.
The police also found a handwritten document that testifies to “both his motivation and his state of mind”, Jessica Tisch said. Although the document did not name specific targets, Luigi Mangione harbored “grievances against corporate America,”, she added.
Luigi Mangione was born and raised in Maryland, attended college in Pennsylvania, had ties to San Francisco and most recently lived in Honolulu, authorities said.
He was arrested on a firearms charge by Altoona police, and New York detectives are en route to Pennsylvania to question him, the police commissioner said. He will likely be transported to New York to face charges related to the murder.
Brian Thompson, 50, was killed outside a Manhattan hotel early Wednesday morning by a masked man who appeared to be waiting for him to arrive before shooting him from behind.
The suspect ran from the scene, then hopped on a bicycle and rode to Central Park. Surveillance video captured him leaving the park and taking a taxi to a bus station in northern Manhattan, where police believe he boarded a bus to flee the city.
Brian Thompson appeared to have been deliberately targeted, police said.
The words “deny” (deny), “defend” (defend) and “depose” (depose) were etched on bullet casings found at the scene, multiple media reports said. The words evoke the title of a 2010 book critical of the insurance industry, “Delay, Deny, Defend: Why Insurance Companies Don’t Pay Claims and What You Can Do About It.”
Brian Thompson, a father of two, had been chief executive of UnitedHealth’s insurance unit since April 2021 after a 20-year career with the company. He was in New York to attend the company’s annual investor conference. A UnitedHealth spokesperson declined to comment on the recent reports.
