Canada records an increase in the serious crime index

Violent crimes hit a higher level than before the pandemic in 2021.

Statistics Canada's profile of crime severity suggests that serious crimes reported to police increased in 2021, while less serious crimes did not.

Indeed, the Violent Crime Severity Index (CSI) increased by 5% in 2021 and reached a higher level than before the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
