
Canadian arrested in Mexico after death of British Columbian woman
A woman from Dawson Creek, British Columbia, was found dead Friday at a resort in Mexico and a Canadian has been arrested in connection with her death.
Mexican prosecutors n did not disclose the name of the victim or the person arrested.
According to her family, this is Kiara Agnew, 23, originally from Plaster Rock, New Brunswick, who moved to Dawson Creek, British Columbia , in adolescence.
In a Twitter post on Friday, local law enforcement authorities wrote that a woman was found dead with signs of abuse in a hotel in Playa del Carmen, and police arrested a person of foreign origin for a possible femicide.
Global Affairs Canada confirms that a person with Canadian citizenship died in Mexico and another is in custody. Ottawa also indicates that consular officials provide assistance to families.
According to Katlyn Levesque, the young woman's aunt, Kiara Agnew was going to be 24 on March 11.
She says that she was looking forward to going to celebrate her birthday at the Mexico with her boyfriend. She was talking about going snorkeling, visiting ruins and beaches.
The aunt says she last spoke to her niece last Thursday.
It was a trip that quickly turned into a nightmare for the young girl and her family. I was told she was found dead at the hotel. I was in shock when I found out and I still am, she says.
She adds that the family is awaiting the results of an autopsy to know the exact cause of death.
Katlyn Levesque points out that her niece always loved traveling and was passionate about animals.
She says Kiara's death is a real tragedy for everyone affected.
