Cégep de Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu: two suspects arrested, confinement is lifted
The forces of order are gradually evacuating the hundreds of students and staff members who are still in the CEGEP premises.
Law enforcement arrested two suspects after establishing a large perimeter around Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu CEGEP.
Students and staff members began to leave the premises of the Cégep de Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, in Montérégie, where they had been confined since Friday morning, following a police intervention which led to the ;arrest of two suspects.
According to the police, a 19-year-old man wearing a bulletproof vest, acting suspiciously, was arrested shortly before 10 a.m. .
Two bags were found next to him. These were searched by the authorities.
The spokeswoman for the Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu Police Department, Barbara Anne-Dion, confirmed that the second person arrested was a minor woman, and that she too had been subdued by the police officers in the area. 10 a.m.
No one was injured.
A pregnant woman was evacuated by ambulance as a precaution , police said.
Students and staff received an alert message shortly after 9 a.m. on Friday morning telling them to take refuge in premises and turn off the lights. Several hundred people are still in the CEGEP premises, awaiting the opportunity to be evacuated by the police.
Each person and each vehicle will be searched by the authorities, it was specified.
All the activities of the day have been canceled, the director general of the cégep, Nathalie Beaudoin, said earlier.
