Cégep Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu: suspect arrested, containment lifted
Law enforcement has cleared the last people in the building to exit.
Police arrested a 19-year-old man.
The last students and staff members left the premises of Cégep Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, in Montérégie, where they had been confined since Friday morning, following a police intervention which led to the ;arrest of a man and questioning of a woman.
According to the municipal police, a 19-year-old man wearing a protective vest bullets and suspicious behavior was arrested shortly before 10 a.m.
Two bags were found alongside him and were searched by authorities.
No one was injured.
The second person concerned, a minor woman, was arrested on the spot and will be questioned by the police, mentioned Jérémie Levesque, spokesperson for the Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu Police Department.
He explained that the presence of the young man arrested on the grounds of the CEGEP and even more his clothing had aroused suspicion.
A person entering CEGEP dressed in such a way has already attracted the attention of several people, who were worried, said Mr. Levesque.
Police have arrested a suspect and will be questioning another person.
Students and staff received an alert message shortly after 9 a.m. Friday morning instructing them to seek shelter and turn off lights.
Impossible, however, to know if the cégep had been the subject of threats before Friday's intervention.
All activities for the day have been canceled, CEGEP Director General Nathalie Beaudoin said earlier.
In a statement, the establishment's management said that the police intervention ended at 4 p.m.
We also mention that students and staff members will be able to pick up their personal effects until 9 p.m., or Saturday and Sunday, between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m.
The usual activities will resume on Monday, the press release still indicates.
