To some extent, children are geeks compared to adults, according to a new study.

Scientists from Brown University, USA, conducted an experiment and found that children are much better and faster than adults at receiving and processing information when it comes to something new to them, writes the Daily Mail.

If your child can do something better than you, don't be discouraged. It turns out that children learn something new better than adults.

For their study, the researchers recruited 14 adults aged 18 to 35 and 13 children aged 8 to 11. They wanted to find out if children have any advantage in receiving and assimilating new information over adults.

Previous studies have shown that gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) (a neurotransmitter, that is, an intermediary for the exchange of signals between brain neurons) plays an important role in memory and learning in both children and adults.

In the new study, the scientists wanted to study how its concentration in our brain changes during learning, and how it differs in adults and children. According to Takeo Watanabe of Brown University, many of the behavioral and cognitive functions of children's brains are not yet fully formed, but in general, children are not inferior in their abilities to adults. On the contrary, in terms of visual learning, they excel.

During the experiment, the scientists asked all participants, both adults and children, to look at certain images that changed frequently. Volunteers had to find significant differences between almost identical images.

The process was followed by scientists who scanned the visual cortex of the brain, the one where visual information is processed, using MRI. It turned out that the level of GABA in children at this time increased and remained high after the experiment. But GABA levels didn't change at all in adults during this time.

Scientists say this neurotransmitter helped children memorize new information faster and more efficiently, so they could come back to it later. This is despite the disadvantages that children have compared to adults in terms of attention and other cognitive functions.

“Our results indicate that GABA plays a key role in improving children's learning efficiency,” says Watanabe.

Scientists hope that the new data will encourage parents and teachers to give children more opportunities to learn new skills, since it will be easier for them to learn them at this age. Now scientists want to conduct experiments to test the levels of GABA in the brains of children using reading and writing.
