China has banned the import of products from Taiwan in response to Pelosi's visit

The list of goods prohibited from importing from the island includes citrus fruits and fish. At the same time, Beijing did not impose restrictions on the supply of Taiwanese chips.

China has banned imports of citrus fruits, fish and other foodstuffs from Taiwan in response to US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to the island that Beijing claims to be its territory. This is reported by the Associated Press.

According to journalists, on Wednesday, August 3, China blocked the import of citrus fruits, frozen fish, in particular, mackerel from Taiwan, but did not impose a ban on the supply of chips and industrial components — this measure would cause turmoil in the global economy if adopted.

The publication notes that although there are no official relations between Beijing and Taipei, there are trade relations between the two parties worth many billions of dollars. This is especially true for the supply of Taiwanese-made chips needed by Chinese factories that assemble smartphones and other electronics around the world.

Journalists added that Beijing has previously used bans on the import of fruits, wine, coal and other goods as leverage in disputes with the authorities of Australia, the Philippines and other countries.

The Speaker of the US House of Representatives met with Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen on August 3, after which she left the island.
