And then, at the end of season 10, The Walking Deadlost the warrior Michonne, gone on an expedition to find the trace of her lover. As the main series draws to a close – the eleventh and final season is expected in the fall – the AMC team has announced three spin-off projects… including a mini-series to wrap up the story arc of those original heroes.
It was a very emotional panel for Scott Gimple and his team. This Comic-Con 2022 was a return to basics for this series which had been presented for the very first time, at Comic-Con in San Diego in July 2010. One way to close the loop: “Rick and Michonne are two of my favorite characters and Andy and Danai are two of my favorite people, explained the showrunner who took over from Glen Mazzara after season 3, Working with them is a dream come true. The three of us, along with the rest of the amazing team that makes The Walking Dead, and also some amazing new voices, are crafting a crazy, epic love story.”
The former showrunner (now replaced by Angela Kang) is still in charge of coordinating the various projects derived from the saga.He will personally take care of this new mini-series expected for 2023.
This isn't the first time the show's team has talked about wrapping up the Rick Grimes story arc. Originally, it was to be a solo film, or a trilogy. It will ultimately be a limited-time series, centered on both his character and that of his companion. A synopsis has already been unveiled during this panel: “The latest spin-off will present an epic love story between two changing characters in a changing world. Separated by distance. By unstoppable power. By the ghosts of who they were. Rick and Michonne are thrown into another world built on war against the dead…and ultimately also war against the living. Can they find each other and find who they were in a place they've never known? Are they enemies? Lovers “Victims? Victors? One without the other, are they even alive? Or will they discover that they themselves are 'walking dead'?”
The panel was also marked by the surprise appearance of the two main actors. Lincoln shared her excitement and satisfaction at wrapping up Rick Grimes' story, while Gurira explained that she was “really looking forward to getting her katana back”. For the last time?
As of now, no specific date has been announced, but the producers are talking about a 2023 release. This will be the third spin-off series next year , after the spin-off centered on the character of Daryl and Isle of the Dead, centered on the characters of Negan and Maggie. In all, this will be the sixth series spin-off from the AMC series.
