Comparison iPhone 14 Pro vs iPhone 13 Pro: which is the best in photos?

Spread the love

We pitted the iPhone 14 Pro against the iPhone 13 Pro in an in-depth comparison. The result is surprising to say the least.

Comparison iPhone 14 Pro vs iPhone 13 Pro: which is better in photo?

On the one hand we have the iPhone 14 Pro, the new flagship from Apple and therefore the most powerful and successful smartphone ever launched by the firm. On the other, its predecessor, the iPhone 13 Pro. Logic would dictate that the first crushes the second in the photo, but we wanted to get to the bottom of it. And we did well.

A technical summary before we begin

< p>Before contrasting the two iPhones, it is probably best to briefly recall what they offer in the field of photography.

The iPhone 13 Pro has three 12 million pixel sensors. With three focal lengths. These sensors are respectively crowned with a wide angle opening at f/1.5, an ultra wide angle opening at f/1.8 and a telephoto lens opening at f/2.8 and offering a 3x optical zoom. The main sensor is also stabilized and we find all the usual technologies with Deep Fusion, Smart HDR4 or even ProRAW.

Technologies also offered by the iPhone 14 Pro. An iPhone 14 Pro which inherits the same optical zoom. The rest, however, changes.

The main sensor goes up to 48 million pixels, and it comes with a wide angle opening at f/1.78 and a brand new mechanical stabilization system. The sensor placed under the ultra wide angle still displays 12 million pixels of definition, but it is larger, with larger photosites. The lens opens at f/2.2. The iPhone 14 Pro also features the Photonic Engine, a new image processing technology.

On paper, therefore, we have slightly less bright optics on the latest iPhone, which is of course compensated by the fact that the sensors are physically larger. The definition is better and the phone also offers new image processing technology with a brand new stabilization system.

It therefore seems rather well equipped to supplant its predecessor, but sometimes you have to beware of appearances

Photo comparison

Which of course brings us to the part that interests you, namely the photo comparison. A comparison that will directly oppose each focal length. And of course, each time, the photos were taken automatically, at the same time. All guaranteed without retouching.

To better contrast the photos, we recommend that you open them in the gallery, or download them.

The wide angle

The wide angles are, as always with Apple, very effective during the day. They recover a lot of detail from the scenes photographed, with an omnipresent sharpness and a dynamic that incites respect. The images crackle and they give the impression of being full of life.

However, at first glance, it is also very difficult to distinguish them. The iPhone 14 Pro doesn't stand out, even when zooming far into the image. The iPhone 13 Pro thus manages to match it despite its old-generation sensor.

In this regard, we must also emphasize an important point: in automatic modes, the iPhone 14 Pro captures images of 12 million pixels of definition. Full definition is only accessible on the ProRaw.

In the evening and indoors, the two phones are once again neck and neck. Beautiful feeling of sharpness, impressive dynamics, natural colors, they produce quality images. Images that once again offer an identical rendering. At least at first glance.

This time, when you zoom in, you can indeed see more differences. The iPhone 14 Pro offers a smoother rendering, the iPhone 13 Pro is therefore more precise. Witness the details of the young woman's sweater, or even those of her handbag. Against all expectations, the old iPhone therefore seems to be a hair above its replacement.

To try to decide between them, I therefore placed myself in a closed room, curtains drawn. In both cases, the iPhones shot with an exposure time of one second.

At first glance, nothing striking. However, when zooming into the image, we see that the iPhone 14 Pro has recovered more detail. The figurine is much less blurry, the same for the rocks placed behind. Every detail of the stone is visible, unlike the iPhone 13 Pro which had a heavy hand in terms of smoothing.

What can we deduce?

Contrary to what one might think, in normal light conditions, the two phones offer a fairly similar result on the wide angle, despite the fact that the iPhone 14 Pro has a whole new sensor.

You really have to shoot in low light to see any difference. With sometimes surprising results. The latest iPhone does indeed seem more at home on very complex scenes. Conversely, the iPhone 13 Pro does better indoors. On the other hand, it should be remembered that the latter, unlike its replacement, was able to benefit from a year of software updates. Apple will probably need some time to get the full benefit of its new 48 million pixel sensor.

The change in focal length – we go from a 26 mm to a 24 mm – did not particularly bother me. Certainly, the framing is not exactly the same, but it is not disturbing.

The ultra wide angle

Now let's move on to the ultra wide angle. Which changes a bit on the iPhone 14 Pro. Apple has indeed opted for a slightly larger sensor, which also results in an increase in the size of its photosites. In theory, therefore, it should achieve better results in low light. But is that really the case?

At first glance, during the day, the two iPhones obtain the same results. Sharp images, a dynamic that dazzles the eyes, one would think that they offer an identical rendering. But this is not the case. By being attentive, we indeed notice that the iPhone 14 Pro has managed to recover more details in the clouds, but also in the tree. Even the church in the background is more precise.

A zoom in on the image also confirms this. Whether it's the texture of the wall in the background or the roof of the houses in the distance, the iPhone 14 Pro was more precise than its predecessor.

We change the atmosphere with this nocturnal shot. Both photos were taken at the same time, the phones were at ground level, photo pod down. At first glance, the rendering is very similar, and we can see that the iPhone 14 Pro still has so much trouble managing flares.

However, when you zoom in a little in the image, you realize that the new Apple phone has been more precise. The best example remains that of the face of the young girl walking with a headband in her hair. If in both cases its features remain blurred, the iPhone 14 Pro still offers the sharpest rendering.

To push the iPhones to their limits, I took these photos in a room totally immersed in the night. And in both cases, with an explosion duration of two seconds. The phones were of course hand-held to make it even more difficult for them.

The two renderings are quite similar. We keep a precise image. Both phones handled the increase in sensitivity well and there are few visible artifacts. Zooming in, however, we see that the iPhone 14 Pro is a bit above. The image is less noisy and the rendering is therefore a little better.

The result:

Here, we see that the ultra wide angle of the iPhone 14 Pro is clearly above that of the iPhone 13 Pro. It is more precise and it recovers more details, even on very complicated scenes. Now, you still have to zoom far into the image to take full measure of these improvements.

The x3 zoom

Which brings us to the last focal length, namely the zoom. On paper, nothing changes from one generation to the next. Nevertheless, the iPhone 14 Pro displays two notable differences: the A16 chip and the Photonic Engine. But is it enough?

By day, we cannot say that the difference is obvious. In both cases, the photos are detailed, with good dynamics and fairly natural colors. As usual, the iPhones are indeed hot, but it's rather flattering.

You have to zoom in far into the image to distinguish the two phones. The portrait of Batman is slightly more detailed on the latest iPhone, especially at the level of his jaw.

At night, the differences are more striking. The iPhone 14 Pro seems to handle flares better. The signs present in the background are at the same time a bit more precise. This is confirmed by a zoom in the image.

Besides, it's not just the signs that are better rendered. The poster, for example, is a little more readable on the iPhone 14 Pro side. Same thing for the bottles from the bar or the horse saddle at the entrance. Overall, then, the iPhone 14 Pro's zoom did its job better.

Just to be clear, I shot these photos in a room plunged into complete darkness, this time with a three-second exposure. Of course, I held the phones in my hand.

Well there again, the iPhone 14 Pro obtained better results than its comrade. The figurine is more detailed, the same for the pot placed behind or the leaves of the plant. Every reflection, every nuance is apparent. The iPhone 13 Pro managed the increase in sensitivity less well. The figurine's glasses lack precision and the image is generally more noisy.

In summary:

I'll be honest, I didn't expect such a glaring difference. Which proves, finally, that the A16 chip and Photonic Engine are not there to decorate. They bring a real gain on the shots.

Portrait mode

Apart from the three focal lengths, you also have to look at the specific modes offered by iPhones. Like portrait mode, for example.

By day, it must be recognized that the rendering of the iPhone 14 Pro is a bit more impressive. It is indeed he who is the most precise. Every detail is faithfully transcribed. The photo literally crackles and this impression is of course confirmed when zooming in on the image. The gaze is thus deeper on the iPhone 14 Pro. With more nuances in the iris.

Indoors and under a beautiful light, the two iPhones offer a very similar rendering at first sight. The image is sharp, detailed, with a very natural blur and which makes it possible to clearly identify the subject of the scene.

It is therefore necessary to zoom in to see significant differences. And again, the iPhone 14 Pro sits slightly above. It is indeed more precise, which can be seen, for example, in my daughter's eyelashes or her green sweater. The meshes are clearly visible in the photo taken with the iPhone 14 Pro. For its part, the iPhone 13 Pro offers a slightly smoother rendering.

At night, outdoors, the two telephones are more difficult to decide between. In both cases, we obtain a precise image, with a clear cutting and a well-worked blur. Even zooming in, you can't see a noticeable difference.

In brief:

Once again, we cannot really speak of a revolution, but the iPhone 14 Pro is clearly above its predecessor. It is much more accurate in broad daylight or even indoors. On the other hand, when the light conditions are more difficult, it will tend to smooth a little too much, which will place it neck and neck with the previous model.

The macro

The macro was introduced with the iPhone 13 Pro. It therefore seemed legitimate to me to mention this mode in this comparison. Especially since it remains, this year again, reserved for “pro” range.

By day, it must be recognized that the two devices are impressive. They are able to generate very precise images with a high level of detail. On the other hand, switching to macro mode is always a bit risky. It will therefore be preferable to remember to activate the button to avoid sudden stalls.

By zooming in, you can see obvious differences between the two phones. The iPhone 14 Pro is indeed more precise. The dynamic also seems much better in the shadows.

Curiously, indoors, the difference is less obvious, even when zooming far into the image. A result that can be explained by the subject photographed. A fairly “flat” topic.

This is what led me to change the rules of the game a bit and to shoot in a room plunged into darkness, with a two-second expo. The phones, this time, were placed on a book to be at the same level. And once again, the iPhone 14 Pro has completely taken over its comrade. The image is much more detailed on his side, we even manage to see the stitches of the duvet cover.

And by zooming in, we see that he is also the one who better managed the climb in sensitivity. The iPhone 13 Pro has begun a general smoothing which has also caused it to lose many details.

The balance sheet:

You have understood it, but here again it is the iPhone 14 Pro that wins. By little, of course, but he still won the round.

The ProRAW

It was of course impossible for me not to talk about the ProRaw. And I will of course start with a bit of theory.

ProRaw is a format specific to Apple, a format that combines the information of a RAW file, and therefore a format without compression, with image processing specific to iPhones. Concretely, therefore, it is a raw format which offers a little more flexibility in post production, but with pieces of apples all the same.

The ProRaw is of course available on all focal lengths, but it There is a peculiarity specific to the iPhone 14 Pro. As I explained earlier, when you shoot at the wide angle, you benefit from the full definition of the sensor. Or 48 million pixels. And it is therefore in this precise use that I opposed the two devices. So I limited myself to this single focal length for the sake of this comparison.

During the day and at first glance, the results are globally similar. Finally apart from the definition and the weight of the photos of course. Count an average of 30 MB per photo on the iPhone 13 Pro, against an average of 70 MB for the iPhone 14 Pro.

And depending on the images, you can even go up to more than 130 MB. Yes, it hurts and it will be better to plan ahead when you choose the storage capacity of your new iPhone.

By zooming, we logically enter another world. The sensor of the iPhone 14 Pro being better defined, it manages to recover much more detail. Witness, for example, the hair on Romy's chest. Every hair is faithfully rendered on the latest iPhone and the previous model is not.

The exhibition, on the other hand, remains quite fragile, as evidenced by the wall behind the subject. The whites tend to burn very quickly and post-production work will therefore be necessary to correct the situation.

A good first impression confirmed with this other photo, the heaviest of our selection. Again, at first glance, we don't see much difference between the two images, except that the one taken with the iPhone 14 Pro seems a bit more detailed.

But when you zoom in, it's the revelation. Each blade of grass is correctly returned. Even better, the latest iPhone also manages to recover more detail in the shadows. Like the texture of stones for example.

Comparison iPhone 14 Pro vs iPhone 13 Pro: which is the best in photo?

I was obviously curious how the iPhone 14 Pro would perform in difficult light conditions. With such a well-defined sensor, he left with quite a handicap. But again, I was pleasantly surprised. The latest iPhone manages to produce much more detailed images once again, with very little noise.

The rise in sensitivity seems to have been particularly well managed on this scene. And when you zoom far into the image, you can see that the statuette is sharper and more detailed on the iPhone 14 Pro.

The summary:

The observation is for me without appeal. In ProRAW, the iPhone 14 Pro is well above its predecessor. Apple has cleverly exploited the beautiful definition of its main sensor. That's all the more impressive considering that the iPhone 14 Pro has only seen one update since launch. The gap should logically widen over the next few months.

So what about selfies?

But we still have one point to mention: the selfies. If the definition does not change, the iPhone 14 Pro offers one or two improvements, such as brighter optics and autofocus. So I was very eager to test it in this use.

In this indoor selfie, I wanted to see how the iPhones behaved with two subjects. And if the overall rendering is substantially the same, we can still see that the iPhone 14 Pro has managed to recover a little more detail, whether in terms of skin or clothing. A confirmed impression when zooming in on the image.

Just to confirm this impression, so I carried out a second test. This time, I put myself in a dark room, with the only lighting being a ray of light coming from the window. This time, the result is without appeal, the iPhone 14 Pro is the most precise.

Not content to recover a maximum of details, it also better manages the increase in sensitivity. There are fewer artifacts. We also appreciate the natural look of the skin.

To sum up:

There, clearly, we can see that Apple has done a lot of work on selfies and the autofocus of the front camera brings an undeniable plus.

And if we concluded  ?

So what can we deduce from all these photos?

With this new photo module, we expected to literally fall in love with the iPhone 14 Pro. This, however, was not the case. In reality, at first glance, the new iPhone offers a rendering very close to the previous model and you have to look at the details to see the obvious differences. At least for normal modes. In ProRaw, the difference is more palpable. And the full definition of the sensor allows you to recompose your scene on the fly.

It should be noted that this new sensor also allows the phone to gain in flexibility. It allows us to gain an additional level of zoom, 2x. A level of zoom that results from a crop carried out directly within the main sensor, of course, but which is still very practical.

It remains to be hoped that the next updates will allow the iPhone 14 Pro to shine a little more.
