Scandal in the European Parliament. In the case of illegal lobbying on the part of Qatar, the Vice-President of the European Parliament, the Greek Eva Kaili, the former MEP from the Socialists, Pierre-Antonio Panzeri, and two other people were arrested. They were charged with “belonging to a criminal organization, money laundering and corruption.” At the same time, two people who had been detained earlier by the Belgian police were released. This is reported by Le Soir.
Kylie was unable to use her parliamentary immunity because she was caught red-handed.
Following reports of her arrest, Eva Kaili was expelled from her own political party PASOK in Greece and suspended from a political group in the European Parliament.
It was reported that “bags of money” were found at her home. Kylie's father was also questioned. It is alleged that he tried to escape with a suitcase full of money when accomplices informed him of the police visit. He was caught on the doorstep of the hotel.
The day before, searches and arrests were carried out in Brussels and its environs as part of an investigation into the activities of a “criminal organization, corruption and money laundering.” About 600 thousand euros in cash, mobile phones and computer equipment were seized. The money was found at the home of Pierre-Antonio Panzeri.
Qatar has been the focus of recent attention as the host country for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. In 2011, there were concerns that Qatar “bought” the World Cup by bribing FIFA officials.
On November 21, 2022, Eva Kylie joined other MEPs for a discussion in the European Parliament on “Human rights situations in the context of the World Cup in Qatar”.
During the debate, Kylie addressed her colleagues, saying that The 2022 World Cup in Qatar is indeed “proof of how sports diplomacy can bring about a historic transformation of a country through reforms that have inspired the Arab world.”
She also visited Qatar where she met with senior officials and ministers , including Labor Minister Ali bin Smaikh Al Marri.
Member of the European Parliament Giorgos Kirtsos said that European lawmakers were shocked by Kylie's performance and her determination to “whitewash” Qatar.
“We knew “that the Qataris and other countries in the Middle East are lobbying the European Parliament. But lobbyists do not demand such unconditional public support. Usually they ask for more elegant ways to promote their interests, for example, during voting. Kylie's speech was extraordinary,” said the MP.
