melty: Hello, can you introduce yourself and tell us where your blaze comes from?

Coyote Jo Bastard: Coyote Jo Bastard, Parisian artist, young rapper and that’s it, eh (laughs). Basically I did graffiti so I already had the “Coyote” and afterwards, over time, I added “Jo” in relation to my first name and “Bastard” is for a series that I liked . And then here is the association I liked it. After my entourage they choose, each takes a little the part that interests him. Then there are also forbidden nicknames but that, we do not talk about it! (laughs)

melty: How did you discover rap?

Coyote Jo Bastard: I discovered rap thanks to my entourage, my family and then on my own too. But since I don’t have a big brother, I was often with my cousins and he made me listen to music all the time. I stole their playlist straight from their iPod! (laughs). We used to listen to the old-fashioned American wave in Mario style etc, dance films… And for my part, I’ve been rapping for a long time but it’s been two or three years since I really started.

melty: We feel that you are inspired a lot by American culture by your name, your sounds …

Coyote Jo Bastard: Crazy ! Especially in terms of music since I was listening to American sounds from a young age. But it was later growing up that I felt closer to American culture. With in particular the arrival of a guy like A $ AP ROCKY, then the evolution of rap in the US too. After today, most of the sounds I will download will be cainri sounds, but I listen to all the French rap, everything that comes out. I remain above all a listener and consumer of rap. Then I understand more easily too (laughs).

melty: You worked with Sfera Ebbasta, Laylow, Leto … How do you choose the artists with whom you collaborate?

Coyote Jo Bastard: Sfera and Leto are the family so it’s really just feeling. For me it is serious the human being who prevails. A guy like Laylow for example, we basically talked on instagram and then we gradually said to ourselves: “Come on let’s make a sound”. We talked for at least three hours in the studio before recording. I prefer to meet the person, we freak out, limit we spend an evening together before and after we make a sound. There are a lot of people that I was offered as a “businessment speaking” feat and I refused. If the guy he doesn’t even know me and stuff, it’s no use.

melty: The feat that you did, which marked you the most?

Coyote Jo Bastard: Hmmm… The one with Laylow! Because the feat with Laylow is actually two years old. We did it in 2018 and it’s coming out in 2020. Yet so much has happened in the meantime, but for me, the sound hasn’t aged a bit. We made some arrangements in the meantime but the title still has the same color. I never got tired of listening to it and neither did Laylow. It’s my favorite piece of the project by the way!

melty: With which artist would you like to collaborate in the future?

Coyote Jo Bastard: My dream would be with Young Thug! And in France, SCH. It’s too hot what he’s doing! When I listen to one of his albums, sometimes I will pause on a sound and I will go and find the definition of the word he just said. He has so much vocabulary, then it’s so sophisticated in his way of doing that you have to take a slap! Vocabulary is seriously important to me, even if sometimes I let myself go a little, it’s something I want to develop. So when I listen to guys who have a very sophisticated vocabulary but who still remains transcendent and street, I am in awe.

melty: How do you do you to differentiate yourself with your music?

Coyote Jo Bastard: I actually don’t ask myself too many questions. I used to put a lot of pressure on myself, then I wondered how many views were going to make my sounds etc. And now I take it as it comes! It’s music, if it’s good and it works it’s cool. In addition, now I have a team that trusts me so I tell myself that if they are behind me, it is not for nothing.

melty: To finish, your EP is now available how you feel and do you have a little word for the readers of melty?

Coyote Jo Bastard: I’m super happy that my EP is available! It’s been so long since I wanted to release a project. I questioned myself and worked on it a lot. And for melty readers, you will all remember me! Whether you like it or not (laughs).
