Danielle Smith announces that the families of the officers killed will each receive $100,000

The families of the two Edmonton police officers shot dead this week will both receive $100,000 from the Alberta Heroes Fund, the premier has announced , Danielle Smith.

Mrs. Smith made the announcement during her weekly radio show where she addressed the issue of the deaths of officers Brett Ryan and Travis Jordan. Officers were killed by a teenage boy, who later committed suicide, while responding to an apartment building on a case of a non-violent domestic dispute.

Ms Smith said the Alberta Heroes Fund was created in 2020 and the money will help families deal with the “costs associated with dealing with this horrific tragedy.”

< p class="e-p">The fund was set up as part of the Safety and Red Tape Reduction Act 2020 and the government website says it aims to recognize the sacrifices of first responders who die in the line of duty.

Ms. Smith also encouraged people to donate to families of police officers through the GoFundMe platform, a fundraiser that has been set up by the Edmonton Police Foundation.
