IN BRIEF

  • The former star weather presenter of TF1, Catherine Laborde, died at the age of 73.
  • She had been suffering from Lewy body disease for several years.
  • Her loved ones, including her husband, have spoken out several times about the impact of this disease on Catherine Laborde.

The sad news broke on January 28, 2025. Catherine Laborde died at the age of 73, and leaves behind a grieving family – including journalist Françoise Laborde who has already paid tribute to her sister on X, formerly Twitter. For several years, the former star weather presenter of TF1 had been suffering from a terrible illness that her close ones have spoken about several times. Catherine Laborde was in fact suffering from Lewy body disease, which is similar to Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases.

During an appearance on Ça commence aujourd’hui, Catherine Laborde's husband, Thomas Stern, confided the impact of this neurodegenerative disease on his wife. “It's a slowly developing disease, but also a neurodegenerative disease. A cocktail between Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. There are motor disorders, language disorders, anxiety attacks, hallucinations… It's a tough picture” he had thus confided while listing some of the symptoms.

Death of Catherine Laborde: her husband had spoken of his illness

Suffering from this disease for several years before her death, Catherine Laborde had therefore suffered the consequences harshly. Her husband had thus spoken of a difficult phase where she had “difficulty expressing herself” and where she understood what was said to her, but had “étremely much difficulty formulating things“. Which makes communication particularly complicated.

As mentioned, Lewy body dementia is characterized by both cognitive and psychomotor disorders. It is caused by the development of Lewy bodies on the outer layer of the brain. This disease has no known cure, and therefore cannot be treated. After announcing her diagnosis in 2018, Catherine Laborde has gradually little withdrawn from public life until making only rare appearances.

Catherine Laborde and her husband had &written a book following her diagnosis

On the set of Touche pas à mon poste in 2022, her husband already reported on the progression of the disease which had caused his wife to lose “her stability, her motor skills”. The couple had also published in 2020 Amour malade, a book in which they described the impact of Lewy body disease on their relationship and the new dynamic that must have developed between them.
