IN BRIEF

  • Catherine Laborde, TF1's iconic weather presenter, died on January 28 at the age of 73.
  • Despite her lasting impact, TF1 paid a minimal tribute with some archive footage and testimonies.
  • Discover how Catherine Laborde left her mark and why she remains unforgettable for so many viewers.

It was an emblematic figure of French television who passed away this Tuesday, January 28. Catherine Laborde was 73 years old and she presented the weather forecast to TF1 viewers for twenty-eight years. A weather presenter on the first channel in July 1988 and January 2017, she left her mark on the minds of the faithful. On her last day, Catherine Laborde addressed the viewers, delivering a moving message. “I told you today about the weather tomorrow, but there is also time passing and this time is the time when I will leave you…”, she began, before adding: I leave with the cold but also with all these memories, and love, this kindness that have carried me during these 28 years”.

An emblematic figure, Catherine Laborde, very moved, had concluded her speech by simply declaring: I take you with me. You will forget me ? Not me. I love you”. Words that have never been forgotten, just like the weather presenter. Despite her media withdrawal, many public figures and Internet users had regularly thought of her. Thus, when her death was announced, they expected TF1 to devote a long report to her… but that was not the case. A minimal tribute was paid to her, with a few archive images and testimonies from her colleagues.

Catherine Laborde: an unforgettable presenter for television viewers

It all started with Evelyne Dhéliat who, at the end of her weather report, paid a subtle tribute to her long-time friend. “I wanted to dedicate this newsletter to our dear Catherine Laborde whose passing we learned of this morning”,she began before continuing: “The keys to Catherine's success were of course her kindness, it transpired through the screen, and her professionalism as well “obviously”. A brief tribute but tender words that highlight the closeness of the two women over the years.

Later, Gilles Bouleau took over the airwaves, announcing Catherine Laborde's death to viewers. The host first discussed all the topics that would be mentioned during this newscast. It was only at the end of his launch that he returned to the death of the weather presenter. “We will hear again the unique voice of our friend Catherine Laborde. She presented the weather on TF1 for 28 years”, he said before concluding:   “We will pay tribute to her at the end of this newscast”. What is surprising since Catherine Laborde is one of the emblematic figures of the first channel.

Catherine Laborde: a brief tribute but an unforgettable figure

At the end of the newscast, a brief tribute was paid to Catherine Laborde. In it, archive images were broadcasted and in particular that of her last bulletin. There is also the interview she gave to Audrey Crespo-Mara, during which she confided about the illness she suffered from. Among the people who wished to salute her memory, there is her sister Françoise. The latter confided that, following her media withdrawal, Catherine Laborde thought she would be forgotten. This was not the case since people, in the street, did not hesitate to ask Françoise Laborde for news of her sister. “She “was happy”, she concluded, tears in her eyes.
