Death of Elias: the two teenagers suspected of stabbing him, indicted and placed in pre-trial detention

Stabbed by two teenagers as he left a football training session in the 14th arrondissement of Paris, Elias was killed on Friday, January 24. His two attackers were charged and remanded in custody.

Two minors aged 16 and 17 were charged on Monday, January 27 and remanded in custody in the investigation into the death of a 14-year-old boy, stabbed after refusing to give up his phone on Friday evening in Paris, the prosecutor's office said.

The two minors, who were arrested shortly after the incident, were charged with “extortion with violence resulting in the death of Elias B., and intentional violence against a minor under the age of fifteen without incapacity against his friend”, specified the prosecution.

Elias B. was leaving his football training on Friday shortly before 8:00 p.m. at the Jules-Noël stadium, in the south of the 14th arrondissement, when the two minors demanded his mobile phone. In response to his refusal, he was violently stabbed in the shoulder, a police source and the prosecution reported.

A friend, who was with him, “performed first aid and helped identify the attackers”, specified the prosecution. Taken to hospital with a life-threatening prognosis, the victim died on Saturday noon.

Already known to the police

The two minors, living in the 14th arrondissement, were arrested shortly after the incident and taken into police custody. According to the police prefect, Laurent Nuñez, interviewed on RTL Monday morning, “one admitted to the attempted extortion and the fatal stabbing”.

The theft of a mobile phone “was the only motive and he “probably did not know” the victim, the prefect specified. The two boys were known to the courts, according to the prosecution. One had been the subject of a judicial educational measure in December 2023 for acts of theft and extortion.

They had both been brought before the courts on October 30, 2024 for acts of theft committed with violence, and they were prohibited from contacting each other. Death by Elias B. has provoked many reactions.

An act of “barbarians”

Prefect Nuñez deplored “an increase in the range, an increase in power, of violence among minors, which is becoming unbearable”.

Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau had denounced an act “of barbarians”. His counterpart at Justice, Gérald Darmanin, brought together all the prosecutors on Monday “in order to give them instructions on criminal policy” in response to the recent “acts of unacceptable violence”.
