On Friday evening, January 20, thousands of Ukrainians went to a rally in the center of Berlin to demand that the German government transfer Leopard 2 tanks to the Ukrainian Armed Forces. A blogger and journalist under the nickname NOËL published video footage from the rally on Twitter.
Men, women and even teenagers gathered near the Bundeswehr. Some brought flags of Ukraine. And someone just threw the flag over their shoulders.
People turned on flashlights on their smartphones and directed their light towards the Bundeswehr building.
“We need tanks!” the crowd chanted.
Leopard 2 tanks: why Ukraine didn't get them
At the eighth meeting of the Contact Group for the Defense of Ukraine in Ramstein, no decision was made on the transfer of Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine.
“We discussed the possible supply of Leopard 2 tanks, but failed to agree. There is no consensus among the partners,” said German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius during a conversation with reporters.
According to him, there are good reasons for sending the necessary military equipment to the Armed Forces of Ukraine, but there are also reasons not to do this.
In turn, the head of the Pentagon, Lloyd Austin, speaking at a press conference following the Ramstein-8 meeting, expressed the opinion that, although it was not possible to agree on the supply of Leopard tanks to Ukraine, good prospects are opening up for the Armed Forces of Ukraine with the package of military equipment, the provision of which did not cause controversy between the allied countries.
Focus also wrote that MEPs in the annual report for 2022 “On the implementation of the Common Security and Defense Policy of the EU” officially addressed the Chancellor Germany to Olaf Scholz with a call to send Leopard 2 tanks and air defense systems to Ukraine.
