Descendants of Raymond and Lucie Aubrac protest against the loan of the Lucie-Aubrac room to the far-right MP Allegret-Pilot

They explain in a letter that Lucie Aubrac was opposed to the RN and its acolytes who “propagate racism, anti-Semitism, xenophobia, division”.

The letter was sent this Monday, January 27, a historic day commemorating the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the concentration and extermination camps. A “coincidence”, they explain.

The descendants of resistance fighters Lucie and Raymond Aubrac wrote a letter of indignation to the mayor of Vigan (Gard) Sylvie Arnal to express their “consternation” after the latter confirmed that she wanted to lend a community hall in the Lucie-Aubrac space on February 1st to the Ciottist MP elected with the Ciotti/RN alliance in the last legislative elections.

“We learned with dismay that your municipality had accepted the reservation of a room in the Lucie-Aubrac space, our mother and grandmother, so that the deputy of your constituency who joined the RN/FN could present his wishes there. Anxious to verify this shocking information, we contacted you by telephone. To our great dismay, you confirmed it, arguing the democratic validity of your decision. The RN/FN and its acolytes are the children of Pétain and French Algeria. They propagate racism, anti-Semitism, xenophobia, division. (…) They are the opposite of the search for unity for social progress, the very ones for which Lucie Aubrac fought tirelessly”, they write

“We do not oppose the violence of the extreme right with successive concessions”

“Madam Mayor, have no illusions. In the light of history, we do not oppose the ideology and violence of the extreme right with successive and deadly concessions, however small they may be. We are weak enough to believe that humanity, democracy, respect and tolerance towards all peoples are at stake. When the extreme right parties take power, they seize it and do everything possible to break the democratic and republican framework. We take note of your decision and deplore it.”

The letter is signed by Renaud Helfer-Aubrac, grandson of Lucie and Raymond on behalf of “the entire family Aubrac”. This letter follows an appeal from children and grandchildren of resistance fighters published in Le Monde after the 2024 legislative elections.

Despite our attempts, we were unable to contact the mayor of Le Vigan.
