After 39 years, cases of an infectious disease appeared in Switzerland.
As reported by the “Wiertualna Polska” website, disturbing information comes from Switzerland, where diphtheria was detected. The last cases of this infectious disease were recorded almost four decades ago. At the moment, two cases have been confirmed, although it is possible that there will be many more patients.
A dangerous contagious disease returns
Two people with confirmed diphtheria infection were at the Federal Asylum Center in Bern. Doctors emphasize that the final balance of infections may be greater, as the results of four more trials are still pending.
The services decided to immediately take action and quarantine all persons staying in the center – a total of 175 charges. Site officials stressed that testing and vaccination were ongoing.
The last case of diphtheria was recorded in Switzerland in 1983. The practical elimination of the disease was possible thanks to the management of common diseases against this infectious disease.
What is diphtheria
Diphtheria is an infectious disease caused by diphtheria coryneus. The pathogen is transmitted by airborne droplets. Once in the body, it infects the mucous membranes of the upper respiratory tract. There are cases in which the conjunctiva, middle ear, and even mucous membranes within the genital organs are affected.
The toxin produced by bacteria can enter the bloodstream and be “delivered” to internal organs, leading to their damage. The central nervous system can also be damaged.
Failure to treat or initiate the wrong therapy can have serious consequences. They are both permanent damage to individual organs, and in extreme cases also death. Infection in children is the most dangerous.
