Two packs of your choice for the DJI Osmo Action 3, with tight prices

DJI is always committed to making its products as accessible as possible. It is partly for this reason that the manufacturer has taken the habit of offering its products in several packs.

The Osmo Action 3 is fully in line with this strategy. Two packs are therefore offered to creators. The standard bundle includes the camera, an Osmo Action 3 Extreme battery, the Osmo Action 3 horizontal-vertical protective frame, the quick-release adapter bracket and the flat adhesive base. The set is priced at €359.

The second bundle, called Adventure Combo, goes further. In addition to the camera, it in fact includes three Osmo Action 3 Extreme batteries and their charging support, the horizontal-vertical protective frame, two quick-release adapter supports and a flat adhesive base. This time for a fixed price of 459 €, 100 € more than the basic pack.

DJI is therefore very aggressive. To put these prices into perspective, the GoPro HERO11 Black is currently offered at €449.98 in its most basic bundle, and with a substantial reduction. In normal times, its price indeed reaches €599.98. The pack with accessories is a bit more expensive. It is currently set at €499.98 with an ongoing discount. The rest of the time, it is offered at €709.94.

An action cam with magnetism

The DJI Osmo Action 3 marks a nice break in the range. Exit the square case, the three-letter brand has returned to basics with a case with a more conventional look. A less compact case, but which has a definite advantage over the previous model: two screens placed on each side of the camera.

These screens contribute a lot to its versatility. They will allow you to film yourself without having to hang it on a second box. You will therefore gain in agility.

If the camera is naturally hardened, it will be possible to protect it a little more by sliding it into its protective frame. A frame present in the two bundles marketed by DJI. And be careful, because the latter is of particular importance. If it will protect your camera, it will also allow you to mount it horizontally or vertically on its mounting brackets. It is indeed equipped with an additional attachment placed on the side of its structure.

Also a magnetic clip. No need for a screwdriver, to fix the camera on one of its supports, it will be enough to approach it. The magnets built into its case will do the rest. And that the less adventurous are reassured, the new supports of DJI are equipped with two tabs of protection. Once the camera is hooked, it will not move. Not until you simultaneously press the two buttons placed on each side of the support, in any case.

In addition to these two screens and the magnetic attachment, the DJI Osmo Action 3 has an optic placed under a protective glass and two buttons. The first, placed on his shoulder, will be used to launch the recordings. The second, integrated on the left side, will have two functions: turn the camera on or off and switch from photo to video.

And the rest, then? The bundle sent to us by DJI is the most complete. It therefore includes, in addition to the camera and its charging cable:

  • three Osmo Action 3 Extreme batteries;
  • the battery charging box;
  • the horizontal-vertical protection frame;
  • two quick-release adapter supports;
  • a flat adhesive base;
  • an InvisiStick handle;

Not much to say about the adapter mounts and the flat adhesive base. You already know these accessories. On the other hand, it is quite different with the battery charging box. A case that of course recalls what the manufacturer offers with the very good DJI Mic. Concretely, therefore, the accessory comes in the form of a box of AirPods in XXL format. A box in which you can slip the three batteries sold in the pack… to charge them at the same time. Really smart, the time saving is appreciable. And as a bonus, you will have LEDs on the front to allow you to view the state of their charge.

Especially since each of these batteries offers a capacity of 1,770 mAh. This will allow the DJI Osmo Action 3 to film for 160 minutes without interruption. That's a total of 480 minutes, which gives about 8 hours. And if that's not enough, then Osmo Action 3 Extreme batteries support fast charging. A first for the range! They will only need 18 minutes to go from 0 to 80% and 50 minutes to go from 0 to 100%. You can therefore recharge them while you film.

The InvisiStick, for its part, will interest the most athletic among you. In selfies mode, the camera will in fact be able to recognize it and make it invisible, as if it were floating in front of you.

The DJI Osmo Action 3, a camera built to last

In “action cam”, the term to remember is of course “action”. If these cameras are to be able to capture beautiful images, they must also be able to withstand the vagaries of filming.

DJI has therefore reinforced the Osmo Action 3 to make it resistant to drops and shocks. Between its hardened case and its glass treated with Gorilla Glass, the small camera will therefore be able to withstand drops of one and a half meters. At least in theory. In reality, of course, everything will depend on the hardness of the ground and the angle of the fall.

Another interesting point is the resistance to water and pressure. DJI has gone far enough. The camera is indeed waterproof and it can go down to 16 meters deep without additional housing. And to go further, you can of course acquire the waterproof case sold as an option alongside the other official accessories.

And if you're the type to like the far north, then know that the camera can work in a nice temperature range, temperatures between -20°C and 45°C. Which will undoubtedly make our Quebec friends smile.

Let's talk not very technical

But as you can imagine, DJI has not only worked on the design and format of its camera. The Osmo Action 3 also goes a step further technically.

It is thus based on a 1/1.7 inch CMOS sensor with 12 million pixels. A sensor crowned with an optic opening at f/2.8 and offering a field of vision of 155 ° in Ultra Wide mode. The sensitivity is between 100 and 12800 ISO with a shutter speed between 1/8000 second and one second in video. In photography, we can go up to 30 seconds to capture long exposures.

In photos, the camera will have the choice between two formats: 4:3 with images in 4000 x 3000 or 16:9 with images in 4000:2250. You will have the choice between JPEG and RAW.

But it is especially on the video that she is illustrated. The Osmo Action 3 can shoot 4K at 120fps in 16:9, or 4K at 60fps in 4:3. With an obvious advantage: the possibility of making beautiful slow motions. It will also be possible to switch directly to the mode of the same name, a mode which will allow the camera to slow down the speed of sequences by 4 times in 4K and 2.7K and 8x in 1080p. Purists will no doubt prefer to turn to their favorite software, of course, but amateurs will largely find their account there.

Here is an overview of all the formats offered by the camera, for standard recordings:

  • 4K ( 4:3): 4096 x 3072 @ 24/25/30/48/50/60 fps
  • 4K (16:9): 3840 x 2 160 @ 100/120 fps
  • 4K (16:9): 3840 x 2160 @ 24/25/30/48/50/60 fps
  • 2.7K (4:3): 2688×2016@24/25/30/48/50/60fps
  • 2.7K (16:9): 2688 x 1512 @ 100/120 fps
  • 2.7K (16:9): 2688 x 1512 @ 24/25/30/48/50/60 fps
  • 1080p (16:9): 1920×1080 @ 100/120/200/240 fps < /li>
  • 1080p (16:9): 1920×1080@24/25/30/48/50/60fps

And this time for slow motion modes:

  • 4K: 4x (120 fps )
  • 2.7K : 4x(120fps)
  • 1080p : 8x(240fps), 4x(120fps)< /li>

DJI also offers several options to change the zoom level or the field of view. Without forgetting the sinews of war for these small action cameras: stabilization.

RockSteady is indeed in version 3.0. I did not have the opportunity to test the two previous versions, but I must admit that I was particularly impressed by the result obtained. The camera is able to suppress most shakes even when used in complicated conditions. It will also be possible to turn to two modes to block the horizon: HorizonBalancing and HorizonSteady. However, I have never needed it in my uses.

We will also appreciate having the choice between two colorimetric profiles: the normal mode, which produces colors that are a bit too saturated , and the famous D-Cinelike mode. With one disappointment though. The latter will not exceed 8-bits. An incomprehensible choice when you know that the DJI Mini 3 Pro can film in 10-bit in this format.

And the image then ?

In video, the DJI Osmo Action 3 offers a fairly decent rendering overall. On the other hand, the dynamic remains perfectible. In normal light conditions, the camera will be able to recover quite a bit of detail in shadows and highlights. However, it will have more difficulty on complex scenes such as backlighting. The whites will burn very quickly.

The dive is passable, the same for the development. Be careful here, however, because it will be better to stay quite far from your subject, which is not really surprising given the positioning of the product. It will also be necessary to be wary of the night. In low light, artifacts will appear very quickly. The fault with the size of the sensor. The image will therefore be more grainy, and difficult to use.

The colorimetry is quite neutral. The basic format is quite efficient and will suffice for most users. But if you want to go a little further, it will always be possible to switch to D-CINELIKE.

D-CINELIKE is one of the flat formats. Without going as far as an S-LOG3 or V-LOG, it offers more latitude for calibration. This means that it can be reworked more easily in specialized software such as Final Cut, Premiere Pro or Da Vinci.

The advantage is obvious. By filming in D-CINELIKE, you will be able to produce smoother sequences, with a slightly more cinematic look. A great flexibility in the program, therefore.

Stabilization is very effective. Enough in any case to save you long hours in post production.

An example of focus limitations.

In photos, we will of course be far from equaling our good old camera or even our smartphone, but the DJI Osmo Action 3 will still be able to generate quality images. However, it will be necessary to pay attention, once again, to the focusing distance.

And for the sound?

We often forget, but in video, the image is only part of the problem. Sound plays a key role. And to choose, it will be better to have a passable image and a clear and audible sound rather than the opposite. At least when you have to produce videos where the voice plays a major role, which is not always the case with action cameras.

This is also the reason why many manufacturers give too little importance to this chapter. Fortunately, DJI did not fall into this trap.

The DJI Osmo Action 3 has a microphone placed at the base of the camera, a microphone which is coupled to an ambient noise reduction system. The camera will therefore be able to clean up its audio track before you import your videos into your editing software. And frankly, the result surprised me a lot. In the correct meaning of the term. The sound remains audible and it will not necessarily be necessary to (much) rework it behind.

It is a good thing, but it is not what makes the strength of this product. For me, its main asset comes from the fact that DJI thinks in terms of ecosystem. The brand's products are indeed designed to work together.

And precisely, you will have the possibility of connecting the Osmo Action 3… to the DJI Mic. With the bonus of a transmission distance of 250 meters. A far from trivial detail. During our test, the DJI Mic had greatly impressed us with the quality of its sound reproduction.

A smart choice on the part of the brand, therefore. Thanks to the DJI Mic, the Osmo Action 3 will gain in flexibility and versatility. It can of course be used as an action camera, but it can also find its place in more traditional productions. Like vlogs, for example.

To give you a better idea of what the DJI Osmo Action 3 is capable of, I shot this unpretentious little vlog in an hour.

And then there's the app

To accompany the DJI Osmo Action 3, you can count on an application specially developed by the brand. An application available on both iOS and Android.

Once the camera is connected to your smartphone, you can retrieve its video feedback and control it remotely. Better yet, you can even switch between the different modes offered, such as timelapse mode, slow motion mode, photo mode, video mode or even live broadcast mode. And all the usual settings will of course be available. In particular, it will be possible to change the definition or the number of frames per second without touching the camera. Even options relating to field of view or white balance will remain available. The same for the stabilization system or the color mode.

This application contributes a lot to the flexibility of the camera. A flexibility that also extends to our PCs. When the Action 3 is hooked up to a computer, the camera does indeed let you choose between several options. File transfer, of course, but also… the ability to use the camera as a webcam.
