As we all know, most of the bees that we know feed on nectar and pollen, however, a group of scientists focused on an exhaustive investigation to understand those species that evolved to carnivores and that today are recognized as unusual bees eat meat .

To try to unravel how this unexpected evolutionary leap occurred, a group of researchers from Cornell and Columbia University investigated the intestinal bacteria of the so-called bees vulture, native to Costa Rica.

The results of the project were published by the American Society for Microbiology and there the discovery of acid-loving bacteria in the guts of these insects was narrated, very similar to those of vultures, whose main diet is carrion.

So far, only three species of bees that feed on dead meat have been detected and most of them are native to tropical rainforests. However, the scientists detected some other sources of these insects that combine their nutrition between pollen and nectar along with corpse meat, if available.

How was the study of bacteria carried out intestines of vulture bees?

In order to identify the differences between the intestines of the vulture bees, the scientists installed more than 15 stations with approximately 50 grams of raw chicken held by ropes at a height of more than one and a half meters.

The collection obtained 159 bees and after exhaustive tests on the intestinal systems, the experts reached a significant conclusion.

Vulture bees & nbsp; managed to evolve and generate a change in their intestines that remained ingrained for more than 80 million years. They developed a more acidic gut with batteries similar to those found in royal vultures and other scavengers, the scientists said.
