Like all Marvel movies, “Doctor Strange 2” has two post-credits scenes. Are they essential ? And what do they mean ? Some answers.

Marvel movies have given viewers this new habit: staying until the end of the credits to discover, perhaps, a new scene that announces the studio's next productions. Sometimes, the directors play on it, incorporating scenes that have no other purpose than to be winks or humorous touches, when others open up a whole new part of the MCU. In other cases, there is no post-credits scene at all.

What about Doctor Strange: in the multiverse of madness ? The answer is twofold: the film that sees the confrontation between Doctor Strange and Scarlet Witch does indeed conclude with two post-credits scenes, but one is programmatic, when the other is just a funny wink. We explain what to remember below.

There are two post-credits scenes: one after the animated credits and one at the end of the credits. Without giving anything away, don't expect any major implications for the future of the MCU in the post-credits scene, which contains a funny wink and not a foreshadowing for the future of the superhero franchise. • In the first post-credits scene of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Stephen Strange can be seen walking down the street before being accosted by a platinum blonde woman in a costume reminiscent of the Eternals. This is actress Charlize Theron, who plays the character Clea, and tells him that he has caused an incursion (understand, the telescoping of two dimensions) and that she needs him to solve this problem. Appearing in the comics in 1964, Clea is a superheroine of the Marvel universe in comics where she rubs shoulders with Doctor Strange in different variations. In turn, she has been his enemy, his lover, his wife… Clea has many powers including that of being able to move between dimensions in the Multiverse. Originally from the Dark Dimension (also sometimes called Hell, ruled by Dormammu), she is sometimes its guarantor depending on the comics in which she appears. Given the short duration of this cameo, it is easy to imagine that Charlize Theron will soon appear in a film of the franchise.
• The second post-credits sceneIt's certainly not essential, but it has the merit of being quite funny. During the film, Dr Strange and America Chavez meet a pizza vendor played by none other than Bruce Campbell, Sam Raimi's sidekick in the Evil Dead saga. While the latter insists that America pay him, Strange casts a spell on him. The pizza vendor will beat himself up for three weeks. At the very end of the credits of Dr Strange 2, we find this man, still beating himself up until the moment when his hand finally stops punching him and he cries out in relief: “It's over!” At first glance, nothing out of the ordinary, but the whole pizza guy sequence is actually a reference to Evil Dead 2, a film in which Ash Williams (played by Bruce Campbell) sees his hand possessed and acting on its own until that he decides to cut it with a chainsaw. Fans of Sam Raimi's cinema will appreciate it.

Sam Raimi directs Doctor Strange 2

Doctor Strange 2, whose full name is Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, is directed by Sam Raimi. The filmmaker, who is notably responsible for Evil Dead and the very first Spider-Man trilogy, was expected to take over from Scott Derrickson after his departure due to creative differences. During an interview with ComingSoon in the United States, Sam Raimi confirmed that he was indeed at working on the sequel project to the 2016 Marvel film starring Benedict Cumberbatch. The American website noted a sequence in Spider-Man 2 in which Jonah Jameson and an associate are thinking about a name to give to Otto Octavius ​​(Dr. Octopus) when his partner suggests Doctor Strange. It is at this point that Jameson explains that this pseudonym is already taken. Many years later, Sam Raimi directed the sequel to the adventures of the Sorcerer Supreme.

Regarding this reference to almost two decades earlier, the filmmaker explains that it is pure coincidence but takes the opportunity to confirm for the first time that he is indeed involved on the Doctor Strange 2 project: “I loved Doctor Strange when I was a kid, but he was always behind Spider-Man and Batman in my mind, probably number 5 on my list of greatest comic book characters because he was so original. But when we were shooting that scene in Spider-Man 2, I had no idea that we would ever make a Doctor Strange movie. It was really funny how that line coincided in the movie. I have to say, I wish I had known that I would be involved in that project someday.”

What to Watch Before Doctor Strange 2 ?

The MCU has been inundating us with multiple releases per year since 2008 and Iron Man. With the arrival of series on Disney+, there are even more elements of this shared universe to watch for fans and the general public. Is it necessary to have seen everything to enjoy Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness ? As always, Marvel Studios has done things well: it is possible to watch Doctor Strange 2 with minimal knowledge of everything else, but those who have seen everything will enjoy it all the more. Here, the minimum to have seen would undoubtedly be Doctor Strange 1, Avengers Infinity War and Avengers Endgame. Throw in the Wandavision series if you want, but Sam Raimi's film does the job of hooking the wagons up for those who don't have a Disney+ subscription. Fans who have seen the Loki series will already know everything you need to know about the Multiverse while fans who have seen the animated series What If ? will better understand the film's many references, but all of this is not necessary for a good understanding of the film.
