The award was presented at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles. Since the mayor of Kyiv could not attend the event, remaining in his native Ukraine, the award was received on his behalf by American actor Dwayne Johnson.

“It is a great honor for us to award him the Arthur Ashe Award for Courage,” the organizers of ESPY noted , when a prestigious award is announced.

And Dwayne Johnson called Klitschko “a man who will tell you very directly that sport is part of why he is where he is.”

As you know, the annual Arthur Ashe Prize is awarded not only to sports figures, but also to those whose contribution “goes beyond sports.” It is important that the recipient has the strength of mind, which helped him to endure in the face of adversity and danger, and be ready to defend his beliefs at any cost.

Vitali Klitschko is not the first boxer to win the prestigious Arthur Ashe award. Previously, the award was given to Muhammad Ali and Howard Cosell.

The decision to award the mayor of Kyiv with an honorary award is due to the fact that Klitschko became one of the key figures in power who stood up for the country when Russia unleashed a full-scale war on the territory of Ukraine .

According to the former world heavyweight boxing champion, it is a great honor for him to receive such an award. Klitschko is convinced that in this way the world has recognized the courage and invincibility of the entire Ukrainian people, who for the fifth month have courageously resisted the Russian aggressor.

“This is a reward for everyone who defends the independence and freedom of Ukraine. Ukrainians have shown that they will not kneel We will stand and win!” – Klitschko commented on the award.

Focus previously wrote that the 92-year-old Ukrainian poetess Lina Kostenko received France's highest award – the Order of the Legion of Honor. The celebrity admitted that the award was a pleasant surprise for her.
