Two men of Polish and Romanian nationality were placed in pre-trial detention on Monday by the Montpellier judicial court. They were stopped at the Ambrussum motorway service station on Friday 17 January while they were in a lorry registered in Poland.
No knowledge of the cargo
Inside, hidden among fruits and vegetables, customs services got their hands on 145 kg of cannabis herb. In one of the cabin’s storage compartments, they also recovered €10,500. In court, the two men, who have clean criminal records, denied having any knowledge of the nature of their cargo.
The driver, a 46-year-old Pole, is a regular on European roads, employed by a transport company, and his passenger is a 27-year-old Romanian, also employed by the same company. Given the lack of guarantees of representation, they were placed in provisional detention in accordance with the prosecution's requests.
At the request of their lawyers, however, additional information was requested, in particular to find a road freight agreement, stating a contract between the sender and the recipient of the cargo. The court also ordered the return of perishable goods.
