Eight teenage girls charged with murder of 59-year-old man in Toronto

A location where police collected clues to the murder of a 59-year-old man in downtown Toronto.

Toronto Police says the attack took place in the York Street and University Avenue area on Sunday, shortly before 12:30 a.m. The young suspects are between 13 and 16 years old.

Police say the man was attacked and stabbed. He was taken to hospital by first responders with life-threatening injuries.

He eventually died in hospital shortly thereafter. The police have taken steps to contact the relatives of the victim. Pending responses from the latter, it will not communicate the identity of the victim.

The police indicate, however, that the man had been living since the end of the fall in a shelter, but that it was not necessarily a homeless person.

Eight young girls were arrested in the vicinity of the attack.

Three 13-year-old girls, three 14-year-olds and two 16-year-olds face charges of second degree murder.

Police say the suspects met through social media and are from different parts of town.

The authorities do not yet know why they went to the city center, this evening specifically.

The police point out, however, that the young girls were involved in a previous altercation the same evening.

Three of them had previous dealings with the police.
