EU high representative reacted to the decision of power structures of Turkey to return the status of the mosque of Hagia Sophia, which is one of the recognized cultural monuments in Turkey and the world.
This is stated in the statement of the EU High representative, published on the website of the European external action service.
“St Sophia has a powerful symbolic, historical and universal value. Turkey has developed a well-known tradition of cultural preservation and a recognized tradition of intellectual and cultural openness. The decision of the State Council to revise the important one for modern Turkey of the decisions of the President Erdogan to pass this memo under the leadership of the office of religious Affairs is regrettable. As one of the founders of the Alliance of civilizations, Turkey has pledged to develop interreligious and intercultural dialogue, strengthening tolerance and coexistence”, – the document says.
