These studies of scientists from the U.S., published in the journal Small, say about the danger of a popular food additive E171 (titanium dioxide). Experts warn that under its influence, can develop chronic inflammation of the intestines, others threaten health processes.
“A popular food additive E171 (titanium dioxide) can cause adverse changes in the composition of intestinal microflora associated with inflammatory bowel disease, other negative health consequences”, — quotes the journal of the American researchers, staff of the University of Massachusetts.
According to scientists, a food additive E171 is used in food industry as white pigment. The substance can be found in a variety of desserts, candies, beverages, chewing gum, other products. Specialists conducted an experiment on mice treated with the additive.
Animals that were given E171, divided into groups: one was maintained caloric diet leading to weight gain, another diet that does not lead to obesity. When summarizing the results revealed that changes in the composition of the intestinal flora occurred in all animals, despite caloric feeding. In rodents recorded the proper balance of good and harmful bacteria, inflammatory processes in the intestine and liver. Dangerous processes have been particularly intense in the mice gained weight.
“Present a special risk of titanium dioxide nanoparticles. Additive E171 consists of at least a third. These particles possess the property to accumulate in the tissues of the body and affect various physiological processes,” warned lead author of the study, Professor Han Xiao.
