Family of man killed by officer sues Peel Police

Family of man killed by officer suing Peel Police

Jamal Francique was shot dead by plainclothes police officers in Mississauga in 2020.

The family of a 28-year-old man killed by a Peel Regional Police officer is suing the police force for negligence.

In the lawsuit filed, the family of Jamal Francique alleges that officers dressed in plainclothes were negligent by not properly identifying themselves and by what she claims was using excessive force rather than making a safe arrest.

Jamal Francique died in hospital two days after being shot during an attempted arrest on January 7, 2020, in Mississauga.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) says Peel Police were investigating Jamal Francique, suspecting the man was involved in drug trafficking and being in possession of; gun. The SIU adds that the police wanted to arrest him for violating his bail conditions.
