Farmers’ anger: FDSEA and JA control the price and origins of dairy products in Aveyron supermarkets

Regularly, Aveyron farmers check the price and origins of dairy products sold in supermarkets. The goal: to control fair distribution within the sector and prevent loss of value. Friday, December 27, they were present at the Leclerc store in Onet-le-Château.

Yesterday, the FDSEA and the JA met at the Leclerc in Onet-le-Château. Following the call from the National Federation of Milk Producers at the beginning of December, farmers invested in three large stores. With a shopping cart, they walk the aisles to check the price and origins of the dairy products found there.

“Milk must be sold at around one euro per liter. If it is sold cheaper, we suspect that producers are not fairly paid. If it is sold more expensive, the margin for processing and/or distribution is not fair compared to that of milk producers”,explains Claude Falip, co-president of the dairy cattle section of the FDSEA.

A fragile sector

“Milk origin: Europe” is written on butter or Emmental cheese packaging. This information is carefully noted on sheets of paper. While the products are being examined by the farmers, a customer says to one of them: “I always buy milk produced in Aveyron.” An action that also helps create a link between producers and consumers.

“With the Egalim law, the sector is doing better than a few years ago, but it remains fragile. We carry out regular checks, to put pressure on supermarkets, but also to perpetuate our farms and encourage young people to set up”, reveals Christophe Malgouyres, co-president of the dairy cattle section of the FDSEA. “We are here to say that tomorrow, we will still be here to produce quality milk.”
