Final duel between Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss in the race for 10 Downing Street

The name of the new leader of the party, who will become prime minister , is expected on September 5.

Former Finance Minister Rishi Sunak and Foreign Minister Liz Truss took the final steps in the race to succeed British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Wednesday.

In the fifth round, Rishi Sunak won 137 votes from Conservative MPs, while Liz Truss garnered 113.

Secretary of State for Foreign Trade Penny Mordaunt was eliminated with 105 votes, according to the results announced by Graham Brady, responsible for organizing the internal ballot.

The two finalists will be decided after a postal vote open to 200,000 members of the Conservative Party.

The name of the new leader of the party, who will become Prime Minister, is expected on September 5.

It was on July 7 that Prime Minister Johnson finally threw in the towel and resigned, after controversy and scandal marked his term of less than three years.

Boris Johnson then indicated that he would remain in office until his successor is named.
