Watch your tail. Scientists reveal how to know for sure if a dog loves you

A new study suggests that a dog's positive emotions are communicated by wagging their tail in only one direction.

Chinese scientists have found that dogs wag their tails to the right when they are in a sitting position next to people they love, and this is due to the activation of their left brain, which is responsible for positive emotions, according to the Daily Mail.

Scientists from the Chinese Academy of Sciences conducted a study on 10 dogs to find out in which direction dogs wag their tail more often when they meet a loved one.

Using motion-tracking devices, the scientists observed the behavior of the dogs and how they wagged their tails during small animal-human encounter sessions over three days. In total, scientists analyzed 21,000 tail movements in dogs to understand the preferred direction of tail wagging.

The study found that dogs mostly wag their tails to the right when they are sitting when meeting a person they know well. And the more the dog was next to such a person, the more it wagged its tail in the right direction. Although sometimes the tail turned to the left, it was much less common.

According to Yun Zhang, who is the author of a new study, the fact that dogs wag their tail to the right side when meeting a loved one is due to the influence the left hemisphere of the brain, where positive emotions are processed.

Scientists believe that when a dog wags its tail to the right, it means that it feels comfortable and happy. And often, tail wagging to the left can indicate that the animal is frightened or very nervous.

The study also became known that each dog wags its tail in its own way, and this is similar to how each person has its own characteristic gait.

“Good and bad emotions are associated with the activation of the left and right side of the prefrontal cortex in humans. The same thing happens in dogs. If the dog wags its tail to the right, then the left side with good emotions is activated,” says Yun Zhang.

Scientists believe that active right-sided tail wagging in dogs indicates an increasingly positive perception of a familiar person with time.

At the same time, scientists from Lincoln University found out last year that dogs are mostly right-handed. Their study showed that more than half of dogs use their right paw when reaching for food.
