If you follow Ligue 1 closely, you must have heard of Othmane Maamma. If not, it won’t be long now. The attacking winger from Montpellier scored his first goal in the elite on May 19 against Lens (2-2). At 18 and a half years old. And delivered his first assist on November 10 against Brest (3-1). A check for 1,912 euros

Because Maamma was born on October 6, 2005… in Alès. This Friday, the Gardois was present at the Nîmes Gazelec New Year's Eve party, where he played two seasons, from 2016 to 2018. He took the opportunity to offer an MHSC jersey to his training club. The striker was accompanied by Michel Benezet, a member of the training center's recruitment unit. He represented Montpellier Hérault and presented a check for €1,912 to Gazelec president Frédéric Vera, as training compensation and Maamma's professional trainee contract.

The player, a Moroccan U20 international, turned professional last summer. “He's a mix of power and speed, a percussion that hurts defenders. He has strong support and a wide range”, describes Benezet, also a former coach at Nîmes Olympique.

A tournament in Marseille…

Vera tells an anecdote: “One day, I attended a big tournament in Marseille, of Uspeg, in which we participated. He played defender for us in U12-U13. And I saw him, defender, dribble everyone and score. There were scouts from Monaco and Montpellier. He was supposed to go to ASM, but he preferred the proximity with MHSC. It's a source of pride for Gazelec. We will never become a big club, but training such players, me who is thinking about handing over after thirty years as president, it gives you a boost!”

Hindered by injuries

Hindered by injuries in this first part of the season, now recovered, Maamma is ready to boost MHSC so that it stays in L1.
